Smooth transition to university

-

SEGI University Group ensures its new students have a smooth transition from secondary school to a tertiary study environment. This element has helped many school leavers who have taken Pre-University programmes at SEGi to attain a high level of success in their academic performance.

One such example is Janelle Foo, a Master of Pharmacy student at SEGi University. She was from the Foundation in Science at SEGi College Subang Jaya where she was one among 18 others who achieved outstanding overall results, putting them in the esteemed Dean’s List.

Top scorer Foo was all smiles when she received the results of her overall grade of 3.90.

“I’m very happy with my decision to do the Foundation programme at this college although I had already done Form 6. Despite good results, I could not get a place in the pharmacy programme at a local university,” Foo says.

Determined to pursue a career in pharmacy, she decided to enrol in the Foundation in Science since it had provided many students with a direct path into degree programmes locally and internationally.

Many of the previous Foundation students with good results had also moved on to other degree programmes, including dentistry and medicine in Russia, India and Indonesia because the Foundation programmes at SEGi are internationally recognised.

“Before coming to SEGi, I did a lot of research on other Foundation programmes in the market. I found this online and also learned about it from a friend who completed this programme here. She is now pursuing a degree in pharmacy,” says Foo.

“Apart from gaining confidence from feedback, I also found the course to be ideal. In addition, I learnt that I can go overseas with this qualification. Since completing the Foundation in Science, I realised that I have become more independent and resourceful.

“This programme gave me a lot of self-confidence. The lecturers also contributed to my growth and learning here. They are dedicated and helped us new students to be comfortable with the new environment and tertiary study style.”

One of the secrets to the Foundation students’ success is the mentor approach enlisted in the programme. In the mentor approach, experienced lecturers give students guidance in focus study groups as well as individual counselling.

The pastoral care offered to school leavers gives them greater confidence and a smoother transition from a school to tertiary level study environment.

The syllabus of Foundation programmes at SEGi also includes project work whereby students are required to apply their knowledge in creative ways such as having exhibitions with experiments, games, visuals and activities which illustrate different subject matters.

Students who have completed the Foundation or A-Levels programme with suitable grades are able to continue with further studies in any of SEGi’s diploma or degree programmes.

SEGi also makes an effort to ease new students into the campus community through the SEGi University Freshmen Night 2012. The three-hour event was held for new SEGi students at the multi-purpose hall at SEGi University in September last year.

It was organised by members of the SEGi Student Representative Council (SRC), who being freshmen before, knew the difficulties of making friends in a big university.

The Student Affairs Department worked with the SRC and SEGi International Students Society to organise the event dedicated to all freshmen of the year, and for them to mingle and make new friends who are not in the same field of study.

It was a memorable night and everyone participated in games and fun activities regardless of position or age. The dinner was sponsored by SEGi University.
