Choosing the right moisturiser
If you or your children suffer from eczema, you need to choose a suitable skin moisturiser. Eczema is a skin condition that has the tendency to be itchy and inflamed when triggered by dayto-day allergens that do not usually affect children and adults with normal or dry skin.
Using over-the-counter moisturisers for dry skin may not be suitable for eczema and may make the skin condition worse.
Check the label on the products to ensure that the moisturisers that you buy do not contain harmful ingredients for eczema such as added fragrance, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), artificial colouring, animal proteins and parabens as these products have a tendency to irritate the skin.
Moisturisers are mainly formulated with “occlusive agents” to cover your baby’s delicate skin with a layer of oil to help prevent excessive water loss, thus keeping the skin moist.
Some brands of moisturisers are added with “humectant agents” that attract moistures from the environment to hydrate the skin.
