A rounded medical degree

His diverse team included a German tutor, a Chinese postgraduate and a Scottish undergraduate, yet the consistent standards across the two campuses meant they all shared a common approach from the start.

The result was a highly successful research collaboration, which is expected to be published in a medical journal in the not-too-distant future.

Reflecting on his trip, Zee Yong said: “I really enjoyed my experience. I always knew we shared the same syllabus and learning resources. Sometimes we even share the same lecturers who travel to deliver parts of the course.

“But now I have seen with my own eyes and understood from my own experience just how similar NUMed is to Newcastle UK.

“The time I spent working with my counterparts in the UK made me realise the outcome of studying at Newcastle University is the same in Malaysia as it is in the UK. Just like the medical profession, the Newcastle University standards are universal.”

While Zee Yong spent much of his time exploring how the brain processes intonation before information, he was also able to discover the delights of the British countryside.

In his spare time and weekends, he travelled from Edinburgh to Essex and soon began to realise that away from the Newcastle University campuses, the UK and Malaysia are very different.

“I wanted to make the most of my trip and I think I managed that. I met many people and saw very different places, but they were all part of my learning experience. At NUMed, we are always reminded that you learn as much outside the classroom as you do inside it.”

The Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB/BS) course prides itself on offering a rounded medical degree.

The suite of technical, practical and communication skills required to reach the top of the medical profession are all provided in the stateof-the-art laboratories and lecture theatres.

Outside the classroom, students are exposed to the clinical setting, encouraged to get involved in the local community and provided with the opportunity to study in the UK.

It is all part of the unique journey that NUMed students make to become doctors of tomorrow.
