Alien pursuits

- By BETHANY FEHLINGER

DO you need a dose of alien horror fiction added to your comic subscription list? Despite its unassuming title, The Saviors (Image Comics, now at issue #4) is your latest choice.

In a sleepy little south-western town along Route 66, Tomas Ramirez never truly grew up. He likes to smoke weed, works at a gas station, and visits the local bar from time to time. He has an easy life, until the story takes a turn.

One day, Tomas is smoking alongside a dried-up riverbed when he hears some weird chatting. When he looks up, he sees two aliens dressed in uniforms – and he recognises one of the uniforms. He races to his friend’s shop to tell him the story of the lizard men.

But just as soon as he chalks it up to smoking too much weed, he gets cornered by the same men he saw before and begins a high-speed run for his life.

Writer James Robinson ( Starman, Earth 2) begins The Saviors in a very basic way, so we had no expectations. When the action starts to heat up, the story jumps alive at the same rate as the chase.

At first I was surprised by how the artwork for The Saviors was very cartoony. However, the more I read and the more I saw how skilled artist J. Bone ( The Rocketeer) is, especially with the pages being in black and white, I think his style fits the wacky story Robinson has created.

It might be weird and seem out of place, but all the elements in this story seem to mesh well. This is a good pick. – York Daily Record/McClatchy-Tribune Information Services
