MPharm- ing a bright future
EUGENE Ngim, a graduate of International Medical University ( IMU)’ s three- year Bachelor of Science ( Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme, is currently pursuing his Master of Pharmacy ( MPharm) at Curtin University, Australia.
He was given credit exemptions for a few modules in the MPharm programme in view of his good performance in the bachelor degree.
“It was a privilege to be an IMU Pharmaceutical Chemistry student because credit exemptions are given for certain modules, which will reduce the workload for the two- year course.
“The IMU Pharmaceutical Chemistry course has greatly helped me to set a strong foundation in the science of pharmacy. One of the selective modules ( Skills Development: Extemporaneous Dispensing) has enabled me to work with different prescriptions and proper labelling, prepare the precise formulations for intended use of the medicine and counselling points.
It has fully equipped me with prior knowledge and practical skills that are useful in understanding the lectures and preparing the compounding products during laboratory sessions in Curtin University.
“The first study period is an intensive six- week training programme involving 30 hours weekly contact and continuous assessment. The first study period I completed was challenging. But I have more time to work on the modules because of the credit exemption. Being a Graduate Entry Master ( GEM) student, we have the benefits of receiving more focused teaching and attention due to our smaller batch. Moreover, the friendly lecturers and staff members are always enthusiastic to offer help,” he said.
This pharmaceutical chemistry degree from IMU is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry ( RSC), UK. The course is undertaken entirely at IMU and completed in three years ( six semesters).
IMU is the first university in Malaysia that provides an undergraduate course in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. After obtaining the IMU BSc ( Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree, those who meet the academic criteria can also continue to pursue the MPharm programme at the University of Sydney or Curtin University in Australia.
They are given credit exemptions in the MPharm programmes. The graduates of the MPharm degrees from these universities can register as practicing pharmacists in Australia and Singapore, but not in Malaysia. Upon completion of the degree, graduates can enter the workforce and begin their career as chemists in pharmaceutical and other chemical industries.
The next commencement for the Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme is in August.
If you have pre- university results, a passion for chemistry and have an interest in working in the pharmaceutical industry, make an online application and pursue this interesting and rewarding career in pharmaceutical chemistry.
If you have just completed your SPM and do not have pre- university qualification, consider enrolling in the one- year IMU Foundation in Science ( FiS) programme, the direct route for entry into any of the IMU’s local degree programmes. The next intake for FiS is in September.
You can find out more about the FiS and Pharmaceutical Chemistry programmes at the Open Day on July 5 at the campus in Bukit Jalil. The team will also be at a town near you this month for Info Days – at Renaissance Kota Baru Hotel on June 20; MS Garden, Kuantan, on June 21; KSL Hotel and Resort, Johor Baru and Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, Kota Kinabalu on June 27; as well as Hotel Equatorial Melaka and Hilton Hotel, Kuching, on June 28.
