Worthy recognition
BRICKFIELDS Asia College ( BAC) has developed sustainable educational programmes in line with its vision of “empowering Malaysians via education”, which has resulted in the development of sustainable educational programmes such as EduNation – a web- based platform that provides free tuition for secondary school students in Malaysia.
To date, BAC has advanced over RM2mil towards EduNation’s operating expenses. At the moment, EduNation hosts over 1,800 academic videos for secondary school students. It now boasts over six million minutes of viewership on its YouTube channel.
BAC chief operations officer Aria Singham who received the SME Recognition Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in December 2014 on behalf of BAC, said the college was delighted to be the only tertiary educational institution to receive this award.
“It’s fantastic to receive the award for Corporate Social Responsibility as we believe education should be accessible to all and should be administered to serve the wider community,” he said.
BAC has also spearheaded several education- based CSR initiatives dedicated to enhancing the livelihood of women, children, the underprivileged and disabled. All these fall under BAC’s charity arm, BAC Gives Back, which is involved in numerous education- based CSR initiatives. BAC Gives Back, in collaboration with TECH Outreach Malaysia, has conducted a series of entrepreneurship workshops for single mothers that enable them to be eligible for jumpstart interest- free loans for individual business ventures. BAC Gives Back also works with the Malaysian Lysosomal Diseases Association, the United Nations Malaysia Country Team and Women’s Aid Organisation.
On April 24, BAC received the Asean Business Awards Malaysia ( ABAM) SME Excellence Award for Corporate Social Responsibility. This is the second time BAC has been honoured for being a good corporate citizen and giving back to the communities. The ABAM recognition identifies BAC as having demonstrated an understanding of the links between business operations and society and conducting business in a way that creates long- term economic and social values.
BAC’s CSR efforts include more than education- based CSR initiatives. BAC Gives Back is community- based and designed for BAC’s friends and extended families as well. Its mission is to support student engagement in meaningful community service work and leadership training that enhances their academic experience, meets community needs and encourages a lifelong commitment to social engagement. This charity arm also routinely organises, supports and contributes to various causes, orphanages, homes and other charitable organisations through fundraising events and activities. These activities ensure the total development of the student, producing highly employable and socially responsible graduates.
An important part of these CSR efforts under BAC Gives Back is the volunteering opportunities for its students and anyone interested. This is part of an effort to provide a more wholesome education experience. BAC has pioneered an all- encompassing curriculum, The BAC Experience. This includes activities within and outside the classroom. These activities give a holistic representation of the students’ complete education, enhancing their academic and career prospects.
The June intake is now under way and students who sign up will receive free books and study materials.
