Honing excellent english
STARTING tertiary education is an important milestone in a young adult’s life. What takes place during their tertiary years will impact and shape a young adult’s personality and character.
Most university courses are conducted in English and different educational institutions may stipulate different language proficiency requirements such as the International English Language Testing System ( IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL).
This can be frustrating for students who are not familiar with the application requirements and more so if their existing qualifications do not fulfil the university’s requirements.
> Complete course in place of IELTS or TOEFL:
ELS Language Centres, Malaysia has over 50 years experience in teaching English, and is one of the most recognised language schools in the world, offering a variety of courses designed to help students master English. ELS Malaysia also offers a unique programme for university- bound students: the Certified Intensive English Programme ( CIEP).
CIEP is unique because it is accepted in many universities and colleges worldwide in place of IELTS or TOEFL.
In short, CIEP is less stressful and more cost- effective as students do not have to sit for multiple English language proficiency tests.
With its nine levels, the full- time CIEP is suitable for students of different levels of English proficiency – from beginner to advanced levels. To date, the CIEP is recognised by more than 650 private and public colleges and universities in Malaysia, universities and career schools in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. Under the tutelage of dedicated, well- trained instructors, students attend 24 hours of intensive classes a week, with hands- on practice in Structure and Speaking, Reading and Writing and Vocabulary Enhancement.
The state- of- the- art Language Technology Centre provides students with access to extra educational material via e- learning.
By the end of the course, CIEP graduates will be able to master speaking, reading and writing skills and also develop other necessary skills such as effective organisation and accuracy in writing.
These skills come in handy when students enrol for programmes in the universities of their choice.
> No better time than the present:
Develop one’s English at ELS is best after secondary school. Developing a language ability takes time and while ELS does this in the shortest time possible, when students begin their university or college programmes, there will be no time left for self- improvement.
> Fast- track acceptance into university:
Apart from the CIEP, ELS Malaysia also provides students with free university counselling services by certified ELS counsellors.

If you’re just hitting the books, you may be missing out – even if you have an excellent memory for text. Below are some tips to help you.
Listen in class
The trick is to look at the learning guide before you go in, and to focus on listening to the most important part of the lecture.
Read the book
Read over the material after class as it will help to reinforce what you’ve just heard.
Talk to someone
Discussion aids memory and will also help you work through different approaches and to bring in background information that may be pertinent.
Test yourself
For some people walking through it verbally is enough to pinpoint areas where you’re still a bit shaky about the subject.
Teach what you’ve learned
When you’re giving a presentation, and having questions directed at you, you will know your limitations. Don’t be shy, but ask your audience to be kind and remind them it will be their turn next.
