ANGLIA Ruskin University ( ARU), one of the largest universities in the East of England, offers seven 3+ 0 programmes through the HELP College of Arts and Technology ( HELP CAT): > BSc ( Hons) Accounting and Finance > BA ( Hons) Business Management > BA ( Hons) Marketing > BSc ( Hons) Computer Science > BSc ( Hons) Business Information Systems > BEng ( Hons) Electronics > BEng ( Hons) Mechanical Engineering ARU has a history of 150 years. It has emerged as one of the leading modern universities in the United Kingdom. Its innovativeness and forward- looking policies have made it a popular university. Its enrolment of 36,000 students includes 14,000 studying ARU programmes in India, China, Malaysia, Africa and the Caribbean.

ARU has developed collaborative partnerships with leading companies, such as Volvo, Barclays, Harrods and UPS, and also conducts quality research for which it is rated “world- leading” in eight areas, including Medicine and the Allied Health professions.

Under the leadership of its vice- chancellor Prof Mike Thorne, it is expanding its academic and research programmes in entrepreneurial and creative ways. ARU was named Entrepreneurial University of the Year 2014 against stiff competition in an annual competition organised by the Times Higher Education ( THE), a competition regarded as the “Oscars” of higher education in the UK.

The seven ARU programmes at HELP CAT are taught by the distinguished faculty with wide professional and industry experience.

One of them is HELP CAT president and chief executive officer Dr Choong Yeow Wei, an expert in Cloud Computing and Data Mining, who conducts research in collaboration with IT specialists in Europe and Asia. Dr Choong has also presented papers at numerous international IT conferences and published research papers in leading IT journals.

Two eminent academics are involved in teaching the ARU Engineering programmes at HELP CAT – Prof Tan Ka Kheng and Dr Tan Hock Meng, PhD graduates of Cambridge University.

The special feature of the programmes is that there are no exams – assessment is by coursework and assignments.

However, there are strict measures to ensure standards are maintained. The university also sends senior members to HELP CAT to oversee students’ performance and keep them up to date with ARU’s progress.

HELP CAT also has procedures to obtain feedback from students regarding quality of delivery of the seven programmes through regular Course Management Committee meetings. This aspect of academic quality control is overseen by HELP CAT vicepresident ( Academic) Prof Leong Yin Cheng.

One regular visitor to HELP CAT is Prof Mike Thorne. “I, or one of my colleagues, will always be here, ready and willing to meet with students and talk with them,” he said.

“I am delighted with the progress of the partnership with HELP CAT. There is a fantastic group committed to the partnership and students – both vital in making an international partnership work well. I also enjoyed conversations with numerous students on the ARU programmes and was impressed with their excitement for the programmes and their ambition.”

Holders of the HELP Diplomas and diplomas from other institutions who have completed two years of study need only another two years to complete the ARU degrees. For SPM holders, studying just four years for a UK qualification is a significant savings in cost and time.

Another special feature of the ARU 3+ 0 programmes at HELP CAT is the 10- day subsidised trip for all students to visit the ARU campus in Cambridge, the UK, with airfare and accommodation provided.

This “Cambridge Experience” is a unique global exposure that enables them to attend lectures and seminars, meet ARU academic staff who are their examiners and access ARU’s extensive network of international industry and business contacts.

This special experience will be organised in the third year of the degree programme. It is also open to HELP CAT Diploma students who register for the ARU programmes.
