In the spirit of giving back
UnIVeRSITI Tunku Abdul Rahman ( UTAR) is one of the premier private universities in Malaysia founded as a not- for- profit private university with a mission to provide quality education to deserving youths in the country.
It is committed to transforming lives and broadening the horizons of youths in the country through education. Since its inception, it has set up scholarships and interest- free loans for deserving students.
Following the close collaboration with Teach For Malaysia ( TFM) since October 2013 in helping rural schools by offering scholarships to needy and deserving students, UTAR Council- cum- Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement ( MMLM) chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik has embarked on a “meet- andgreet” visit to selected rural schools under the TFM Scheme, which included SMK Dato’ Wan Ahmad Rasdi ( DWAR), Changkat Jering and SMK Kamunting, Kamunting in northern Perak as well as Penang schools SMK Sungai Ara, SMK Sungai nibong, SMK Permatang Rawa and SMK Taman Sejahtera.
The delegation was also joined by UTAR education Foundation Board of Trustees chairman Tan Sri Datuk Dr Sak Cheng Lum; Tunku Abdul Rahman University College ( TAR UC), Perak Branch Campus head Assoc Prof Dr Choy Siew Chee and TAR UC, Penang Branch Campus head Amos Teoh eng hock.
“To date, UTAR has offered RM63mil worth of scholarships to deserving students to pursue Foundation programmes. While we welcome top achievers by providing them scholarships, we’re also very interested in engaging underachieving but talented, skilful students to hone their existing talents,” said Dr Ling. he added that UTAR, along with TAR UC, has the pool of experts available to coach students in areas such as STeM ( science, technology, engineering and mathematics), sports and culinary arts, should the schools require such assistance.
“Students are also welcome to further their education at institutions under the University System of Tunku Abdul Rahman ( USTAR) – UTAR, TAR UC, the Institute of Childhood education- Studies and Community education ( CeCe) and KOJADI Institute,” he said.
In support of the objective to create awareness about the human mind and its unlimited potential, UTAR has been actively hosting the Malaysia Festival of the Mind ( MFTOM) since 2007.
“We’d be happy to see all the students at the upcoming 11th Malaysia Festival of the Mind at UTAR Perak Campus where the students will be shown and taught fascinating tips about tapping the potential of the human mind,” he said, introducing West Wong Woon Chieng, a UTAR Actuarial Science alumnus who is dubbed the “human Calculator” of Malaysia, to the schools.
“West Wong is an outstanding UTAR alumnus who won third place in the Flash Anzan category in the World Mental Olympic Games in 2012. It’ll be interesting to let the students know that if they can train their minds, they will also be able to calculate digits like him,” Dr Ling said.
The visit also saw Wong demonstrating his extraordinary ability in a series of equations thrown at him. Through his stunning demonstration, Wong shared that Mathematics is a pattern. “Once the pattern is learnt, there is no reason to dread the digits because they can be calculated quickly and effortlessly,” he concluded.
established in 2002 with just 411 students, UTAR now offers more than 110 programmes in various fields to over 24,000 students in its nine faculties, three institutes and three centres located in the Sungai Long City Campus and Perak Campus, which was awarded the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia ( Malaysian Institute of Architects) Gold Award in the education category in 2013. UTAR has more than 38,000 alumni. Over the years, 97% of UTAR graduates get employed within six months of graduation.
