Engineering a solid career

-

HERIOT- WATT University Malaysia has recently revealed new programme offerings, among them, the BEng ( Hons) and MEng Civil Engineering programmes.

The BEng ( Hons) Civil Engineering programme covers the main Civil Engineering disciplines, namely Water Engineering, Geotechnics and Highway Engineering, while instilling the basic skills and practical knowledge in students which will propel them on their journey towards becoming chartered civil engineers.

Accreditation for this programme will be sought from the Joint Board of Moderators ( JBM), which represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institute of Highway Engineers, once these programmes are fully operational.

This undergraduate degree programme is designed to equip students with the fundamentals of Civil Engineering while continuously emphasising their personal development in a professional setting.

The university practises a mixed mode of teaching and assessments. For students, this means that the programme content is delivered in a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical work.

Assessments consist of coursework and examination, including a design project and research dissertations that make up 50% of the final assessment in the final year.

This practice provides students with a more interactive learning environment, and ensures that they receive a more practical, hands- on education that will stand them in good stead as they enter the workforce.

Additionally, students who are looking to further their Civil Engineering education will have the opportunity to do so mid- way through their degree programme.

The programme has been structured in such a way that those who meet the progression requirements during their second year may opt to skip their final year and transfer to the MEng Civil Engineering programme, which they will subsequently complete in another two years.

Furthermore, Heriot- Watt’s Civil Engineering programmes are supported by the Civil Engineering industry advisory committee, which provides students with employment advice and work placement opportunities.

Upon graduation, students will be well equipped to work for engineering consultants, contractors and the government.

Other career prospects for graduates in Civil Engineering include designing and overseeing construction projects such as urban drainage systems, roads, bridges and buildings.
