Opportunity for further studies

-

KBU has always been steadfast in its efforts to empower the financialconstraint students by giving them the opportunity to further their studies.

In its continuous effort to recognise and award scholarships for the outstanding and needy students, KBU recently partnered with BBGS Alumni Berhad to offer Elena Cooke Education Fund to two of its students, Lee Chia Hui, 20, and Shahrina Mohd Shafiq, 17.

They were awarded the Elena Cooke Education Fund after going through a tough selection process that includes a one- to- one interview session.

Lee was accepted into Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management while Shahrina realised her dream of being an interior designer with a diploma programme in Interior Design at KBU.

Stepping stone

“The scholarship that I received from BBGS Alumni Berhad serves as a stepping stone to be free from the poverty trap,” said Lee, who comes from a financially needy family with her sick mother and four siblings.

The student stayed in a shelter home for children since 14 years old due to her family’s financial condition.

Shahrina from Johor was elated: “I will now be able to realise my dream of becoming an interior designer. Thanks to KBU and BBGS Alumni Berhad for making this possible.”

KBU Principal Dr Chee Choong Kooi said: “KBU is proud to be able to help students from a difficult background. This initiative is a part of the college’s social corporate responsibility which is also in line with the late Tan Sri Teo Soo Cheng’s vision of empowering everyone with education.”

“We hope the students will now be able to focus solely on their education without worrying about the finances,” he added.

Touching lives

The Elena Cooke Education Fund works closely with top educational institutions such as KBU International College, so that successful candidates are financially covered throughout their diploma or degree courses. Under the arrangement, the college will usually cover the tuition fees while the funds for accommodation, book and living expenses will be taken care by the Elena Cooke Foundation.

The fund, which was set up in honour of the late Elena Cooke, the longest serving headmistress of the Bukit Bintang Girls’ School ( BBGS), is aimed at helping the financially needy students who may have fewer A’s in their SPM results than top scorers.

However, the students must have a good track record in their school co- curricular activities and must be serious about education beyond Form 5. The fund is a fitting tribute to Cooke who spent over half a century in the school as a student, teacher and headmistress while touching the lives of many through her discipline and nurturing approach.

KBU also offers an array of other scholarships such as Merit Scholarship 2016, KBU Founder’s Scholarship, Sports Scholarships and Student Leaders and Top Office Bearers Scholarships.
