Triple treat

-

November’s wasteland adventure Fallout 4 and early 2016 action game Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End emerge from the Game Critics Awards for e3 2015 with three wins apiece.

After years of anticipation, Fallout 4 was finally and formally confirmed the week before bethesda’s June 14 stage presentation at e3 ( electronic entertainment expo).

Its post- apocalyptic treatment of boston was subject to a grand reveal with senior staff detailing new crafting and base- building mechanics, plus greater flexibility in accommodating player preferences.

For the members of the GCA judging panel, sourced from 38 mainstream and enthusiast publications, the upcoming November 10 release on PC, Xbox one and Playstation 4 was worthy of its best of show, best role Playing Game and best PC Game awards.

Joining it on three wins was Playstation 4 showcase Uncharted 4.

Despite having its release date moved from late 2015 to early 2016, Uncharted 4 formed a significant part of the sony Playstation conference.

Its gameplay demo retained the hallmarks of a great Uncharted game: thrilling spectacle, skin- of- your- teeth escapes, snappy one- liners from the casual but eminently capable Nathan Drake, and careful orchestration of key moments by development studio Naughty Dog.

For GCA voters, it was not only best Action/ Adventure Game but also best Console Game, and its art direction and technical wizardry combined to win an additional special Commendation for Graphics.

Star Wars Battlefront, which launches on Nov 17 on Ps4, PC and Xbox one, took best Action Game, with best sports going to FIFA 16 ( september 2015) and best racing to the new Need For Speed ( November) title.

Ps4 title Horizon Zero Dawn ( 2016), with its lush greenery, robotic dinosaurs and red- headed female lead, won best original Game, and interplanetary explorer No Man’s Sky won best Independent Game for the second year running.

Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker ( september, Wii U) was best Family Game while The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes ( late 2015, 3Ds) won best Handheld/ mobile Game.

virtual reality firm oculus vr had announced its paired oculus Touch controllers – handheld, motion- tracked joysticks with rumble feedback built- in – at a pre- e3 June 11 presentation in san Francisco. For the GCA panel, the tech was the best Hardware/ Peripheral. — AFP relaxnews
