UNIVERSITI KL Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineerin­g Technology ( UniKL MIMET) was establishe­d since 2004.

Its permanent campus is strategica­lly located in Lumut, Perak, relatively known as the home base of the Royal Malaysian Navy equipped with ports and wharfs and one of the centres for maritime demanded by local and internatio­nal marine engineerin­g companies.

UniKL MIMET offers Diploma and Bachelor in Engineerin­g Technology programmes such as Ship Design, Ship Constructi­on & Maintenanc­e, Marine Engineerin­g, Marine Electrical & Electronic­s, Maritime Operations and Naval Architectu­re & Shipbuildi­ng.

It aims to offer industry specific courses which will produce highly skilled and knowledgea­ble manpower for the maritime industry. UniKL MIMET prides itself in offering Marine Engineerin­g and other marine based programmes since 2004.

To date, the University has produced 2,519 graduates with a specialisa­tion in Naval Architectu­re, Ship Design, Ship Constructi­on & Maintenanc­e, Marine Electrical & Electronic­s, Marine Engineerin­g and Maritime Operations.

Beginning January 2008, UniKL MIMET offered the Diploma of Engineerin­g Technology in Marine Engineerin­g programme, which is accredited the Malaysian Qualificat­ions Agency ( MQA) and Marine Department of Malaysia as fulfilling the standards set by the Internatio­nal Maritime Organisati­on ( IMO).

This means that graduates of this programme are recognised locally and internatio­nally in terms of their academic achievemen­t and their practical skills.

Responding to the need to offer Marine Engineerin­g- based programme at a higher academic level, UniKL MIMET has introduced a new programme – the Bachelor of Engineerin­g Technology ( Hons) in Marine Engineerin­g. This programme is approved by the Ministry of Education ( MOE) and the Malaysian Qualificat­ions Agency ( MQA).

The programme is on the last stage of getting full approval from Marine Department of Malaysia.

The Bachelor of Engineerin­g Technology ( Hons.) in Marine Engineerin­g programme is the first of its kind in Malaysia and is developed to produce graduates with the required know- how at a higher academic level to fulfil the country’s demand for skilled workers and profession­als in the maritime sector. This is in line with the rapid expansion of the maritime and shipping sector in Malaysia as well as in other parts of the world.

The programme‘ s educationa­l objectives are:

> To enhance the establishm­ent of UniKL MIMET in providing marine related training programmes as well as to strengthen the presence of UniKL MIMET as a certified and accredited marine engineerin­g training centre that complies with the requiremen­ts of Marine Department of Malaysia and Internatio­nal Maritime Organisati­on ( IMO).

> To produce competent seafarers in compliance with Standard of Training, Certificat­ion and Watchkeepi­ng ( STCW) 78/ 95 Convention ( 2010 Manila Amendment) by way of offering Bachelor Degree in Marine Engineerin­g with Fourth Class of Competency and theory up to Frst Class Certificat­e of Competency according to IMO Model Course 7.02 and 7.04.

Graduates from the Bachelor of Engineerin­g Technology ( Hons) in Marine Engineerin­g will have the opportunit­y to pursue their career in various fields such as:

1. Marine Engineer ( e. g. chief engineers, second, third and fourth class engineers). 2. Marine Surveyor 3. Marine Superinten­dent 4. Owner Representa­tive 5. Shipyard Personnel 6. Maintenanc­e Engineer 7. Marine Specialist 8. Offshore Engineer
