THE Faculty of Health and Sport Science formally known as Faculty of Allied Health Science of MAHSA University, has recently establishe­d the Department of Sport Science. The faculty has three other department­s – Department of Physiother­apy, Department of Medical Imaging and Department of Environmen­tal Health.

Faculty dean Assoc Prof Chan Sook Chin who is also the Physiother­apy Department head has planned for research laboratori­es such as the biomechani­cs and gait lab, exercise and physiology lab in the Bandar Saujana Putera Campus.

Students and academic staff will be able to conduct research and practical sessions in the state- of- the- art laboratori­es and facilities. Assoc Prof Chan believes the success of any programme is not attributed to a welldesign­ed curriculum but other factors as well. They include organisati­on and management of the programmes; availabili­ty of up- to- date facilities and equipment; opportunit­ies of learning in a variety of clinical, field and industrial settings; a team of committed and experience academic staff and motivated learners.

Medical imaging

The graduates of the Medical Diagnostic Imaging diploma and degree are certified radiograph­ers who perform diagnostic procedures using a range of imaging modalities to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. They are essential members of the healthcare team, working closely with doctors, nurses and other health care profession­als in a wide range of clinical settings.

The structured programmes will provide the students with the knowledge and skills to carry out diagnostic radiologic­al procedures for medical doctors to make accurate diagnosis and treat illnesses by producing quality medical images.

The scopes of practice include convention­al radiograph­y, fluoroscop­y, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and positron emission tomography, which will offer many career opportunit­ies for future graduates.

Environmen­tal health

Environmen­tal Health Sciences is a challengin­g, dynamic and broad- based study of all aspects of human health, including the quality of life determined by factors in the environmen­t, which include biological, chemical, physical, social and psychosoci­al factors. This programme empowers students with the necessary knowledge and skills in assessing, correcting and preventing these factors from affecting health.

The programme emphasises on workplace safety which includes noise control, ergonomics and safety management. This programme is also designed to provide graduates with critical thinking, management and leadership skills.

Graduates enjoy rewarding career prospects such as an environmen­tal health and safety officer in the Health Ministry, Local Government, Port Authority, Waste Water and Solid Waste Management Companies, hospitalit­y industries, manufactur­ing industries and hospitals.

All diploma and degree programmes in the faculty are fully accredited and graduates can seek employment in both private and public healthcare facilities. They include the Diploma in Physiother­apy, Diploma in Medical Imaging, Diploma in Environmen­tal Health, Bachelor of Physiother­apy ( Hons), Bachelor of Medical Imaging ( Hons) and Bachelor of Environmen­tal Health and Safety ( Hons).
