WORLD Discovery Travel is a leading agent in Christian- interest tours for pilgrimage study to the Middle East and Europe. It has been conducting pilgrimage tours to the Holy Land since 1997 and its products have been steadily evolving and expanding to include new destinations and more elaborate itineraries.
“When we first began pilgrimage tours to the Holy Land, it was a pretty basic programme that was only six days and used the cheapest available flights,” says World Discovery Travel managing director and Christian Tour Department founder Inbam Solomon.
“Our current Holyland Pilgrimage Tour uses premium hotels and is over 12 days. It includes many Old and New Testament sites. We use Emirates Airlines, which offers the flexibility of several flights a day and has daily departures. Using Emirates also provides the opportunity to connect to a variety of destinations, as we’ve learnt many people now want to perform these pilgrimages with family members residing in other countries, so it’s important we allow that flexibility.
“We understand that performing a pilgrimage can be expensive as ground costs are in US dollars, and to assist pilgrims we are looking into the possibility of re- introducing our basic pilgrimage to enable those who want to visit the essential sites only. Naturally, this will not be as extensive as our study tour programmes and hotels engaged will differ,” says Inbam.
Recently, World Discovery Travel introduced its Egypt Christian Study tour, which reflects on the book of Exodus and the Pharaonic culture of that time. The guide engaged was an Egyptologist, and an Old Testament lecturer was consulted in the designing of the tour itinerary and accompanied the group as spiritual director.
Among its regular offerings are Holy Land pilgrimages ( Jordan and Israel), footsteps of St Paul ( Greece and Turkey including Patmos) and church history ( the Balkans and Luther trail). It also coordinates Oberammergau Passion Play tours and Catholic- interest tours to Poland. As most groups are by private booking, clients are to enquire with Christian tour specialists on these programmes.
