Japan and South Korea provide inspiration for a collection that juxtaposes the old and new.
AUSTRALIAN modern lifestyle brand Oroton looked at two vibrant Asian cities this season.
The Spring/ Summer 2016 collection took its cue from the vitality and energy of the city of Tokyo and from the dynamism of South Korea.
In a design capacity, that means new shapes and a striking colour palette.
Autumn tones of warm wine and raisin is used alongside cool winter hues which are anchored in rich warm browns and the effortlessness of grey.
A key note of the collection is the celebration of individualism as seen in the street style of the mini- malism of Japan and its understated elegance.
New additions include the Matilda, a useable, effortless everyday bag in a bucket shape made for wandering the streets, and the Pioneer, a small but functional satchel.
Gloves provide the finishing touch in neutral tones along with a luxurious cashmere wrap.
Contrasts are reflected in both the palette where dark meets light and in the new graphic prints.
The Sydney tote is ultra sleek number with bold contrasting stripes. Interesting pieces include the new Zone and Directions prints, inspired by the clean lines of Japanese architecture and the arrows of neon signs.
“Street style is something that really inspires us when travelling to Tokyo and Korea,” says creative director Ann Maria Escobar. “The detail and thought put into every outfit – how they wear a bag, how they play with soft accessories, the way they personalise their look – I think it’s all very individual and the attention to detail is something that we really notice.”
The rich mix of old and new, from the traditional temples and Meji shrines, to the art museum in Tokyo’s up- and- coming precincts also struck a chord with her.
“It’s easy to fall in love with the images of women wearing traditional kimonos in a city full of 3D screens and loud music and lights.”
It all amounts to a collection puls- ing with the life of the new melded with the heritage and relaxed glamour that is the Oroton signature.
Tailored to life in a metropolis, the rich cultural inspiration points have been refined into a polish that encapsulates the new season and is a true celebration of contrast.
