BBQ King is a unique speciality store specialising in barbecues and all other outdoor entertainment and lifestyle products. A one- stop centre featuring all global brands in this category, it has been operating for the past 11 years with six stand- alone stores and six shop- inshop at selected kitchen shops.
For barbecues, BBQ King carries only imported global brands which are certified and tested like Barbecook, Outback, Somasia, Rinnai, Napoleon and CADAC. For other outdoor products like tables and chairs, it carries the best from the US, the Lifetime Brands, which is also the market and brand leader for Garden Sheds and Play Sets. Recently, BBQ King was appointed to handle and distribute Igloo, the world No. 1 cooler boxes from the US. BBQ King is the main importer of Igloo products into Malaysia and carries the largest array of the 500 different products now offered to the market. It is the market leader in this category. Igloo will be made available in all BBQ King stores and selected kitchen shops.
Igloo began in 1947 as a small metalworking shop with two employees. The company produced metal water coolers designed to replace wooden drinking buckets used by construction workers, oilfield workers and longshoremen on the docks. Evolving to insulated, all- plastic water coolers in 1965, these water coolers soon became the cooler of choice on the job site.
Through a series of joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, the brand and company grew, and the first rectangular ice chest – a 22- quart metal unit with plastic liner – was produced in 1960. By 1962, the company had grown to 73 employees and in that year offered the first all- plastic ice chest.
In 1963, Oshman’s Sporting Goods in Houston became the first retailer to offer the plastic cooler to consumers – a resounding success – and the rest is history. The Giant Sea Chest, a 155- quart plastic cooler, made its debut in 1967 and quickly became a bestseller with Gulf Coast fisherman.
Continuing to lead in innovation, Igloo introduced the iconic “tenttop” Playmate personal- size cooler in 1971. Igloo launched the first wheeled cooler, the Cool Roller, in 1994, the patented “cube- shaped” cooler design, the Ice Cube, in 2003 and furniture- grade wood patio coolers in 2006. In March 2014, ACON, a Washington, DC- based private equity firm bought Igloo.
Igloo coolers are sold by more than 250 retailers around the world. Today, it remains the No. 1 cooler manufacturer worldwide.
