For a solid future
IN today’s innovative and technology- advanced world, it is important for an educational institution to nurture graduates who are able to apply their knowledge of mathematics and science in the real world, and train them to think like engineers. It would empower these graduates to be confident and innovative in their creation, thus allowing them to imagine the future and transform that imagination into reality.
First City University College ( First City UC) is fulfilling that role by offering engineering and computing programmes which are industry- relevant, and by taking on a hands- on approach in teaching to mould these future engineers and IT specialists to be industry- ready.
Guided by the philosophy of providing affordable quality education, First City UC, via its Faculty of Engineering and Computing, makes sure that its programmes are taught by capable and dedicated lecturers who are committed in making sure students excel in their studies.
To further enhance the education quality provided, the university college partners up with reputable UK universities for its 3+ 0 programmes; Sheffield Hallam University ( SHU) for its BEng ( Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Nottingham Trent University ( NTU) for its BSc ( Hons) Software Engineering.
Apart from programmes offered in collaboration with SHU and NTU, First City UC is also rolling out its own home- grown programmes; Bachelor of Electronic Engineering with Honours starting from January 2017 and Bachelor of Software Engineering ( Hons) in September 2017. In the near future, First City UC will also award Bachelor of Computer Science ( Intelligent Systems) ( Hons) and Bachelor of Business Information Systems ( Hons).
All its academic programmes have been designed to ensure the graduates are equipped with skills that are relevant to the demands of employers around the world.
In an effort to further enrich students’ learning experience, the faculty organises the annual Innovation Day in the middle of the year as a platform to stimulate creativity and innovation.
This event features presentations of final year students’ projects, and provides these students with the opportunity to connect with wellknown industry players, whose representatives are also invited.
First City UC also works closely with key players in the industry, one of which was the recent Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) signed between the institution and IBM Malaysia to renew its academic collaboration to embed IBM technologies into First City UC’s ICT curriculum and equip its undergraduates with cognitive computing skills.
Since the establishment of the MoU in 2008, First City UC has produced high calibre graduates equipped with professional IBM certification. Under this collaboration, First City UC provides teaching resources and facilities, whilst IBM provides leading software, courseware, training and testing necessary to gain certification. First City UC had also adopted IBM curriculum in their home- grown degree programmes.
The engineering and computing students stand to benefit from the many seminars and workshops organised by the faculty, which regularly invites speakers and experts from the relevant industries to impart their extensive knowledge on the know- hows with students. There are also regular industrial visits arrangements, which allow these students to witness and observe the inner workings of real world processes.
With all these knowledge and experience, it is no surprise that many of First City UC’s alumni go on to secure jobs at reputable companies and achieve high employability rates.
