Super snacks

- – Compiled by Sheela Chandran

DURING recess, students can get much needed energy from a snack. It is very important to consume healthy food because when kids are hungry, it is difficult to concentrate in class. Ensure you pack items that are nutritious and low in fat, calories, sugar and salt.

What are some of your favourite snacks during recess? Do you pack doughnuts, sandwiches or muffins to school? Or do you prefer nasi lemak, listed as one of Time Magazine’s 10 healthiest breakfasts in the world.

Instead of consuming junk food during recess, try to snack on healthier alternatives such as baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and mini cucumbers which will provide you with essential vitamins. Don’t forget to ask Mummy to pack fruits such as apples, melon wedges or bananas for you to bring to school, too.

Fruits contain vital vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy and strong. In Australia, there’s the Go For 2 & 5 health campaign in which it is recommended that adults eat at least two servings of fruits and five servings of vegetables daily. Do you practise this at home everyday?

Recently, Starchild asked readers to share their thoughts on the topic, My Favourite Snack. Let’s hear what they have to say.
