The perfect concoction
THE Monin Cup Student Malaysia 2016 was held at Berjaya University College of Hospitality ( Berjaya UCH) on May 28 this year.
Students from higher education institutions around Malaysia took part and this competition brought out the best in each of the participating students. They were judged on their creativity, skills and innovation in cocktail and mocktail preparation.
Berjaya UCH has students participating in both the categories – cocktail and mocktail preparation – with three students from the Berjaya School of Hospitality participating in each category.
Participating students from Berjaya UCH received four out of six prizes. It was an overall win for the mocktail category with students of the institution taking home the top three placements:
Champion – Ryan Phang Shee Zhe, Bachelor of Hospitality Management ( Hons)
First runner- up – Bau Yi Wen, Bachelor of Hospitality Management ( Hons)
Second runner- up – Chang Lai Teng, Diploma in Hotel Management
The students used local herbs and spices infused with black tea, soda water or ale with Monin syrup to create a sophisticated mocktail that teases the palate of the drinker.
Phang’s creation, Wuyi’s Dream, is a unique blend of warm cocktail of tea and Monin syrup with a mixture of pomegranate juice and blueberries. He also added some rosemary sprigs for the pine- like fragrance with pungent taste, adding to the sophistication of the warm mocktail.
The creations by Bau and Chang were no less innovative. Both presented their creation of CurryKi and Ah- Sam by adding local herbs and spices such as curry leaves and tamarind to their blend, creating a distinctive, flavourful mocktail with a familiar yet refreshing sensation for the palate.
In the cocktail category, Steven Lukman Ong, a student of the Bachelor of Hospitality Management ( Hons), made the institution proud by taking home the first runner- up prize with his concoction of Jack O’Maple – a fine combination of Monin Orange Curacao liqueur and Monin Spice syrup with the strong, smooth flavour of Jack Daniels and jackfruit puree and a dash of calamondin juice to add to the refinement of the palate.
The lecturers who trained the winning students were senior lecturers Ronald W. Binati and Kumaran Govindarajoo, who both agreed that getting to the top requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Staying on top, however, requires a double- fold of that hard work and dedication.
