The coun­try cel­e­brated its 59th Na­tional Day yes­ter­day. In con­junc­tion with the mem­o­rable event, this ex­hi­bi­tion show­cases the his­tory of the coun­try from Emer­gency to In­de­pen­dence, and in­cludes the for­ma­tion of the Malayan Union, the Fed­er­a­tion of Malaya and the elec­tions of 1955. Fea­tur­ing old pho­to­graphs from the Na­tional Archives’ col­lec­tion. Time: 9am- 6pm. En­trance is free.

This solo ex­hi­bi­tion by award- win­ning artist He­len Guek Yee Mei aims to present the be­long­ing of place and cul­ture iden­tity through vis­ual images. The artist seeks to cap­ture the pro­cesses of the mem­ory, deal­ing with states of change through the in­ter­sec­tion of in­her­ited cul­ture and the re­la­tion­ship with a ge­o­graph­i­cal di­men­sion of the host en­vi­ron­ment. Fond Farewell is an in­ter­ac­tive mur­der mys­tery which be­gins as a solemn me­mo­rial ser­vice for mil­lion­aire Ben­jamin Full­man which launches into hi­lar­ity as a son, a daugh­ter and three wives ar­rive to claim his in­her­i­tance. Be pre­pared to be part of the crazi­ness as au­di­ences will be in­vited to guess who among them is telling the truth. Sign up for In­ter­na­tional Med­i­cal Uni­ver­sity’s ( IMU) char­ity run which aims to raise over RM180,000 for the needy. There are var­i­ous cat­e­gories, in­clud­ing the 3km fun run, 10km team chal­lenge and 5km Ju­nior Boys and Ju­nior Girls run. Funds will be chan­nelled to Home of Peace, Rumah Ti­tian Kaseh and IMU Cares Hu­man­i­tar­ian Fund. In aid of the Needy Can­cer Pa­tient Fund and in- con­junc­tion with prostate can­cer aware­ness, Mount Miriam Can­cer Hospi­tal is or­gan­is­ing its sec­ond 4km char­ity fun run. All par­tic­i­pants will be given an ar­ti­fi­cial mous­tache to wear as a sym­bol of sup­port to­wards prostate can­cer aware­ness. The run dou­bles up as a fund- rais­ing event for needy can­cer pa­tients. Each par­tic­i­pant will re­ceive a run­ner’s T- shirt and a mous­tache- shaped pewter fin­isher medal. Time: 6am. TO­DAY: The sound of blues and rock will re­ver­ber­ate when Ito & All Star Blues Band take on this renowned live venue. SEPT 11: Crit­i­cally ac­claimed and best- sell­ing New Age pi­anist Kevin Kern is set to per­form in Malaysia for the first time ever. The con­cert cel­e­brates the 20th an­niver­sary of the pi­anist’s New Age de­but al­bum In The En­chanted Gar­den ( 1996), which sold triple- plat­inum in Asia. In the years since, he has re­leased over 10 best- sell­ing al­bums glob­ally. His record­ings have ranged from the clas­si­cally flavoured cin­e­matic melodies of Sum­mer Day­dreams to the or­ganic acous­tic tex­tures of The Wind­ing Path. SEPT 5: In this show­case, award- win­ning Hands Per­cus­sion fea­tures var­i­ous in­ter­con­nec­tions of in­stru­ments such as shigu, bo­nang, kesi, gen­dang, cello and gongs. As it draws on Malaysia’s rich fu­sion of mu­sic and cul­ture, au­di­ences will hear a syn­the­sis of sounds and ar­range­ments. The reper­toire will in­clude se­lected pieces from the en­sem- ble’s many per­for­mances, in­clud­ing the award win­ning Tchaikovsky On Game­lan and The Next.
