The country celebrated its 59th National Day yesterday. In conjunction with the memorable event, this exhibition showcases the history of the country from Emergency to Independence, and includes the formation of the Malayan Union, the Federation of Malaya and the elections of 1955. Featuring old photographs from the National Archives’ collection. Time: 9am- 6pm. Entrance is free.

This solo exhibition by award- winning artist Helen Guek Yee Mei aims to present the belonging of place and culture identity through visual images. The artist seeks to capture the processes of the memory, dealing with states of change through the intersection of inherited culture and the relationship with a geographical dimension of the host environment. Fond Farewell is an interactive murder mystery which begins as a solemn memorial service for millionaire Benjamin Fullman which launches into hilarity as a son, a daughter and three wives arrive to claim his inheritance. Be prepared to be part of the craziness as audiences will be invited to guess who among them is telling the truth. This production is presented by the students of HELP Academy’s A- levels department. Sign up for International Medical University’s ( IMU) charity run which aims to raise over RM180,000 for the needy. There are various categories, including the 3km fun run, 10km team challenge and 5km Junior Boys and Junior Girls run. Funds will be channelled to Home of Peace, Rumah Titian Kaseh and IMU Cares Humanitarian Fund. Besides the run, there will be food, fun activities, bands, games for children, and dance performances. Registration fees: RM35- RM500 ( groups). Time: 6.30am- 10am.

In aid of the Needy Cancer Patient Fund and in- conjunction with prostate cancer awareness, Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital is organising its second 4km charity fun run. All participants will be given an artificial moustache to wear as a symbol of support towards prostate cancer awareness. The run doubles up as a fund- raising event for needy cancer patients. Each participant will receive a runner’s T- shirt and a moustache- shaped pewter finisher medal. Time: 6am. Registration fee: RM80.

TODAY: The sound of blues and rock will reverberate when Ito & All Star Blues Band take on this renowned live venue. The band, famed for its rootsy music, will dish out original nuggets from Ito’s Blues Gang catalogue and classic covers from both the pre- war and urban blues eras. SEPT 11: Critically acclaimed and best- selling New Age pianist Kevin Kern is set to perform in Malaysia for the first time ever. The concert celebrates the 20th anniversary of the pianist’s New Age debut album In The Enchanted Garden ( 1996), which sold triple- platinum in Asia. In the years since, he has released over 10 best- selling albums globally. His recordings have ranged from the classically flavoured cinematic melodies of Summer Daydreams to the organic acoustic textures of The Winding Path. SEPT 5: In this showcase, award- winning Hands Percussion features various interconnections of instruments such as shigu, bonang, kesi, gendang, cello and gongs. As it draws on Malaysia’s rich fusion of music and culture, audiences will hear a synthesis of sounds and arrangements. The repertoire will include selected pieces from the ensem- ble’s many performances, including the award winning Tchaikovsky On Gamelan and The Next.
