C. S. TAN was awarded a Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam ( JPA) scholarship to study audiology at the Institute of Laryngology and Otology, University of London, the United Kingdom, in September 1982. Upon graduation, he returned to serve at the ENT Clinic, Hospital Besar, Kuala Lumpur.

In 1988, he went to work at the Ministry of Health, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

He joined the Ministry of Health, Bisha, Saudi Arabia, in 1991 for a year before proceeding to the UK to pursue the MSc in Clinical Audiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manchester.

At the end of 1994, he was again offered a clinical job in audiology in Bandar Seri Begawan.

In 2001, he returned to his hometown in Malacca and together with his wife, who is retired from her senior nursing profession, set up his own audiological practice at Tan Hearing Centre Sdn Bhd, Ayer Keroh Height, Malacca, till today.

As one of the pioneer audiologists in the country with more than 30 years of experience, Tan would like to share his experience and audiological knowledge with fellow audiologists as well as other individuals who make up the rehabilitation team for the hearing impaired.

Besides audiologists, rehabilitation of the hearing impaired – be they very young children, adults or senior citizens – involves collaboration with other experts in related disciplines such as ENT ( ear, nose and throat) specialists, paediatricians, speech therapists, special teachers for the hearing impaired, child psychologists, occupational therapists and social workers.

In short, it demands contributions from a multidisciplinary team to render a total quality management in services, especially to young children who are unable to speak up about whether or not a strategy is effective.

Other related investigations – such as of ear- related vertigo, tinnitus, medico- legal cases and industrial noise pathological cases – are also not stand- alone investigations by audiologists but a corroborative effort through the multidisciplinary team approach.
