Bad breath be gone

-

BAD breath can be embarrassing as it can affect personal relationships as well as general communication. Therefore, it is important to not let bad breath stand in the way of your conversations.

Bad breath is also known as halitosis. According to a study published in

in 2011, around one- third of the population worldwide is affected with moderate halitosis while 5% of the population suffers from severe halitosis.

There are many reasons for the onset of halitosis, including consumption of certain food, respiratory tract infections and metabolic disorders.

Bad breath is commonly caused by sulphur- producing bacteria that normally live on the tongue surface and throat. These bacteria produce volatile sulphur compounds ( VSC), which produce odour from breaking down food in the oral cavity. Dry mouth can also contribute to bad breath.

There are many ways to freshen one’s breath, such as through odour- neutralising tablets and oral rinses, but these solutions only offer temporary relief. One of the most cutting- edge methods to stop halitosis is the consumption of oral care probiotics.

K12, a type of probiotic, is one of the most numerous beneficial bacteria naturally found in oral cavity. It accounts for 15% to 40% of total oral microorganism population in healthy people.

This probiotic creates BLIS ( bacteriocin- like inhibitory substance) proteins known as Salivaricin A and Salivaricin B that help prevent many oral issues, including bad breath. Most probiotics, including

K12, compete with other microorganisms for space and nutrients and this competitive environment is beneficial to maintain a healthy balance of oral bacteria.

K12 is a probiotic that has the ability to fight infections. Pathogen build- ups create an imbalance in the flora environment, thus causing halitosis, dental cavities and infections.

The BLIS molecules Salivaricin A and Salivaricin B target and attack these pathogens and replace them in the colonisation site. K12 communicates with specific cells in the mouth to excite them, thus boosting the body’s immune system. Consistent consumption of

K12 helps restore good bacteria balance in the oral cavity. This balance is needed to effectively reduce bad breath by inhibiting the growth of VSC- producing bacteria.

A study published in the

in 2005 found that 85% of the subjects who ate a lozenge containing K12 experienced substantially reduced amounts of VSC in their oral cavity.

The BLIS proteins from the K12 strain help optimise oral health at the microbial level. They also work to maintain healthy ears, nose and throat.

Practising good oral hygiene such as brushing, flossing and using mouthwash can assist in fighting halitosis.

While there are many other ways to maintain oral health, oral probiotic consumption is a great choice if you need to improve bad breath, repopulate your oral microflora as well as boost your oral health.
