A narrow escape
BEN and Will were walking in the fields, discussing their Science project as they headed home. Their friend Shane was showing Katerina how to start a fire by rubbing a match across a piece of paper.
Suddenly, a spark flew and Shane dropped the match onto the grass. It started a small flame which grew bigger.
“It’s all my fault,” groaned Shane as he broke into a sprint. Soon, the flames turned into a bushfire. The children became panicky. The smoke was choking them and they started coughing.
The children followed each other closely so that they would not get separated. The intensity of the fire was getting unbearable. The smoke blocked their view.
Ben scanned the surroundings, looking for an escape route. Katerina started crying.
Will could feel the tension building up. He tried to figure out a way to escape. Soon, the only sounds were Katerina’s sobs, the howling wind and the crackling flames.
Suddenly, Will stood very still. He could hear the roar of engine in the sky.
“Guys, did you hear something?” asked Will.
Ben nodded. He was speechless.
Katerina looked up and saw a spaceship zipping across the bushfire. It circled the bushfire and landed.
“Am I hallucinating or what?” murmured Ben. He was shocked to see an alien stepping out of the craft.
“Hi, I’ve came to rescue you. Don’t stare at me like that,” said the alien.
The children stepped into the craft. They had never expected an alien to help them. Soon they were on their way to safety and homeward bound. – By Hazel Lim Zhan, 10
