Coolest camp ever
Because it’s cold up in Genting, and also because interviewing butlers, scoping out gibbons and checking out the largest hotel laundry plant in South-East Asia is pretty darn cool.
WE’VE kicked off this year’s round of BRATs young journalist workshops on a high: a 1,760m above sea level high.
The four-day BRATs Genting 2017 camp took 31 aspiring teen journalists off Genting’s beaten track and onto a brandnew adventure featuring the rainforest, coffee making, and an up close and personal look at the inner workings of the hotel industry.
They were guided along the way by journalist facilitators from the award-winning R.AGE team, who also gave them a crash course on everything a modern-day multimedia journalist needs to know: writing skills, video production, photography, and most important, journalistic values.
Armed with these new skills, the BRATs were ready for #TheJournalistLyfe!
They were conducting interviews, shooting videos, and taking notes and photos while trekking through Genting’s pristine rainforest trails looking for gibbons and pitcher plants.
From the rainforest, it was a short Awana SkyWay cable car ride to the peak, where Team Claire hit up the uber-swanky 13,000 sq ft Royal Suite at the Genting Grand Hotel and interviewed Magnum Butler Academytrained butlers.
Team May Lee followed the smell of brewing coffee and landed in Cafes Richard, where they learned one more skill – coffee-making; and Team Julien beheld the technological wonders of First World Hotel’s laundry plant, the largest hotel laundry plant in South-East Asia.
As always, there will be stories, photos and videos from the BRATs themselves. But since this is our last edition, their stories and photos will be published in the BRATs section of The Star’s NiE pullout on April 19.
