Students intending to pursue an engineering programme at a public university need to do well in either a matriculation, Asasi (foundation) programme or the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination.
To progress to a bachelor’s degree programme, matriculation and foundation in science, students need to have a minimum CGPA of 2.70 and pass all major subjects, with a minimum grade B- in mathematics, chemistry and physics.
For students who choose the Form 6 pathway, they must pass their STPM with at least a grade E in general knowledge studies and Bin mathematics or advanced mathematics, chemistry and physics.
Typically, diploma students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree need to graduate with a minimum CGPA of 2.70 in addition to two years of experience in a related field from an institution accredited by the Education Ministry and approved by the university’s senate.
Aspiring engineers who are looking to pursue their studies at a private institution or branch campus, transfer overseas or even enrol in a public university can pursue A-Levels or International Baccalaureate (IB).
A-Levels is widely recognised by many institutions that offer engineering courses. Students need to score a minimum of AAB or AAA in the essential subjects, which are mathematics, chemistry
(for chemical, petroleum, nanotechnology or biomedical majors) and physics (for civil, mechanical, aeronautical, automotive, electrical, industrial, mechatronics or engineering technology majors).
Good grades in further mathematics, design technology or geography subjects are also useful in meeting enrolment requirements.
As for students pursuing an IB Diploma, a minimum of 36 points with five in mathematics and physics at the higher level is required for enrolment in an engineering course.
