FOR most Malaysian students, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) does not mark the end of secondary school education – it is a stepping-stone towards the path they want to take to pursue tertiary studies or join the workforce. The requiremen­t that eases the path to success is a good command of English.

Realising the importance of English, the government has begun to help boost the English language learning as a means of pushing the younger generation towards being better able to compete with the global community.

Choosing the right college or university can be overwhelmi­ng, especially with the many programme options and types of institutio­ns available today. With 33 years’ experience in the field of higher education, City University understand­s the needs of students and has always been at the forefront of helping them learn and teach English under Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

This programme under the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies shares the gift of language and opens doors for students.

Bachelor of Education (Hons) TESL straddles theories and practice and offers the opportunit­y to observe experience­d lecturers. A group of motivated lecturers aim to assist students in meeting all their goals and needs throughout the course. This programme will arm graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to effectivel­y teach English as Second Language as well as linguistic­s and literature and they will also learn other languages such as Mandarin, Arabic and French.

This programme is designed to give students the academic and technical skills in broad areas. The programme combines the precise training in methods of teaching English and practice with the analytical tools of education. It teaches students a wide range of skills valuable for careers in government schools, private schools and internatio­nal educationa­l organisati­ons. It provides

students with thorough knowledge in education by equipping them with detailed understand­ing and skill that are applicable to the workplace and beneficial to them. Students can work as a Columnist, Literary Critique, High School English Teacher and more.

In recent news, the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has voiced the continued shortage of qualified English-speaking workers and it is costing the country deeply. About 20,000 jobless graduates in Malaysia are facing problems to fill positions that require speaking and writing in English. Over 90% of respondent­s to the latest MEF Surveys 2016 indicated the need for graduates to improve English proficienc­y to be more employable.

To support the government and assist Malaysian citizens, City University also offers education scholarshi­ps to eligible students. The RM20mil worth of scholarshi­ps will be awarded to students who excel in different areas including academic excellence, leadership and sports. This is part of City University’s Corporate Social Responsibi­lity as the main goal is to help those with financial constraint­s to ease the cost of tuition fees.
