Green week and open days at AISM

-

ENVIRONMENTAL education provides important opportunities for students to become engaged in real world issues that transcend classroom walls.

An important feature of the Australian curriculum is the raising of students’ awareness of sustainability issues.

To support this part of the curriculum, the Australian International School Malaysia (AISM) runs a Sustainability Programme through activities in the school and in classrooms.

The programme helps students understand complex environmental issues confronting our planet.

By understanding and taking action, AISM students acquire the skills they need to reduce negative impacts on the planet, become creative problem solvers and environmentally aware global citizens.

This year, in conjunction with its Open Days on June 2, 5 to 9, the school will also run its Green Week with a special focus on reduce, re-use and recycle.

Several activities have been lined up including a sharing session with guest speaker Matthias Gelber, also known as “Green Man”, who will relate his experience in reducing and conserving resources and living a more sustainable life in Malaysia.

Other highlights also include lunchtime TED talks by a teacher who recently returned from a Himalayan Trek, a student on her journey in turtle conservation as well as photography competitions and a “Zero Waste” lunch day.

The school has other ongoing sustainability projects throughout the year.

One of the most significant “green opportunities” last year was the opportunity for six AISM students to meet and talk to Dr Jane Goodall, a world-famous scientist and environmental campaigner.

The students were able to show her their projects and receive feedback.

Find out more about AISM during Open Days on June 2, 5 to 9 from 10am to 1pm.

Prospective families who would like to visit and tour the school can make an appointment with the Admission’s Department on any working day.
