PER­DANA Univer­sity is one of the few pri­vate higher ed­u­ca­tion in­sti­tu­tions in Malaysia to of­fer a Mas­ter’s pro­gramme ma­jor­ing in Pub­lic Health – a rapidly grow­ing field where pro­fes­sion­als who are in­no­va­tive and mo­ti­vated to re­duce health­care dis­par­i­ties are in high de­mand.

Pub­lic health work­ers with a global per­spec­tive are needed to help close the gaps in ba­sic pub­lic health ser­vices, such as im­mu­ni­sa­tions, dis­ease out­breaks that af­fects com­mu­ni­ties such as dengue, HIV and H1N1 and to work on other pre­ven­tion and treat­ment ser­vices.

With a Mas­ter of Sci­ence (Pub­lic Health), grad­u­ates are bet­ter pre­pared to work with in­di­vid­u­als, fam­i­lies and com­mu­ni­ties to strengthen health sys­tems and im­prove pub­lic health.

The pro­gramme at Per­dana Univer­sity pre­pares stu­dents who want to be com­mit­ted to pub­lic health ca­reers in ei­ther the pub­lic, pri­vate or non-profit sec­tors. The pro­gramme pro­vides a rig­or­ous cur­ricu­lum to help stu­dents de­velop the an­a­lytic and crit­i­cal rea­son­ing skills to im­prove pop­u­la­tion health. It pro­vides a foun­da­tion of learn­ing and train­ing to pre­pare stu­dents for their an­tic­i­pated ca­reer paths by pro­duc­ing grad­u­ates who have the skills to per­form well on the job upon ini­tial hire. The qual­ity of the stu­dent learn­ing ex­pe­ri­ence is en­hanced through ap­plied and ex­pe­ri­en­tial learn­ing. The close fac­ulty men­tor­ing will help stu­dents meet their per­sonal goals.

Grad­u­ates can even­tu­ally work with gov­ern­ment in­sti­tu­tions, non-profit agen­cies, hos­pi­tals and clin­ics as well as a va­ri­ety of or­gan­i­sa­tions. They would be able to cre­ate, im­ple­ment and eval­u­ate global health pro­grammes and poli­cies, con­duct re­search on emerg­ing dis­ease pat­terns and crit­i­cal global health is­sues, pro­mote health be­hav­iour change among com­mu­ni­ties, re­spond to dis­as­ters and as­sist in re­cov­ery and as­sure the qual­ity and ac­ces­si­bil­ity of health ser­vices.

The Mas­ter of Sci­ence (Pub­lic Health) pro­gramme at Per­dana Univer­sity of­fers elec­tives in oc­cu­pa­tional health and epi­demi­ol­ogy and has the pro­vi­sional ac­cred­i­ta­tion by the Malaysian Qual­i­fi­ca­tions Agency (MQA).

Per­dana Univer­sity was es­tab­lished as a Pub­lic Pri­vate Part­ner­ship (PPP) ini­tia­tive by Aca­demic Med­i­cal Cen­tre Sdn Bhd, a sub­sidiary of Chase Per­dana Sdn Bhd with the sup­port of the Unit Ker­jasama Awam Swasta of the Prime Min­is­ter’s Depart­ment.

Per­dana Univer­sity is en­vi­sioned to be an ed­u­ca­tion re­search hub for the re­gion to ful­fil the needs of the na­tion for com­pe­tent health sci­ence grad­u­ates.

The univer­sity op­er­ates from an in­terim cam­pus that is well-fur­nished and con­ducive in the Malaysia Agro Ex­po­si­tion Park Ser­dang (MAEPS). The lush green­ery and scenic land­scape pro­vide a brief respite from lessons and is just a short drive away to the town­ships of Ser­dang, Sri Kem­ban­gan and Pu­tra­jaya. It is also sev­eral min­utes away from IOI City Mall. The univer­sity at­tracts some of the bright­est and promis­ing aca­demics lo­cally and in­ter­na­tion­ally, who pro­vide guid­ance and share their knowl­edge with stu­dents.

A va­ri­ety of un­der­grad­u­ate and post­grad­u­ate pro­grammes are also avail­able at the univer­sity, in­clud­ing Medicine, Oc­cu­pa­tional Ther­apy and Bioin­for­mat­ics.
