Lowering your blood pressure
HIGH blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) affects more than 32% of Malaysians aged 18 and above, according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2011. HBP used to be associated with the older generation but this is not necessarily so anymore.
According to the Malaysian Society of Hypertension, younger people are getting affected by HBP because of poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles. HBP occurs when the force of the blood flowing through the vessels is consistently too high.
Known as the “silent killer”, it often has no obvious signs or symptoms and develops slowly over time. When left uncontrolled or undetected, HBP can lead to various health problems such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke, vision loss and kidney disease.
Evidence has shown that a deficiency of nitric oxide can be the reason for the HBP. It is a soluble, highly reactive gas produced from the raw materials such as amino acids L-citrulline and L-arginine.
However, research suggests that the ability to produce enough nitric oxide in the blood vessel linings decreases with age. Scientific studies have proven L-citrulline and L-arginine supplementation increases blood levels of nitric oxide more effectively, resulting in vasodilation. It widens blood vessels and increases blood flow and circulation, reducing HBP.
Nitric oxide also helps the blood vessels maintain its flexibility so that the blood can flow freely throughout the body, preventing clots and plaque buildup on the inner walls of the vessels. This promotes smooth blood flow and hence, better functioning of the body’s physiological processes.
Both L-citrulline and L-arginine may also help with chest pain because nitric oxide prevents blood clots (thrombosis), which cuts off blood supply.
They are also said to improve physical performance, boost energy level and support muscle development, immune function and brain power.
Overall, increasing L-citrulline and L-arginine has been shown to offer significant health benefits as they help maintain normal blood pressure level and cardiovascular health.
