The Star Malaysia - Star2 - - Education Guide -

WE live in the world of technology with applications, online games and basically anything connected to the Internet. Technology is growing into a powerful tool that enables us to get information at the tips of our fingers.

There are thousands of applications that can be downloaded for almost anything from photo editors and traffic updates to health and fitness, language translators and more, not forgetting a whole load of online games as well.

To have all these applications and games are exciting but to be able to know how it was put together before we are able to download them into our smart phones would be thrilling for some.

Multimedia can be an exciting field for creative individuals who are also tech-savvy. If you are interested in game design, graphic design, interactive media design, 3D modelling, Internet authoring, animation and everything in this line, multimedia is the right course for you.

Through this programme, you will know in depth about how to come up with the things you use and see every day.

What should I expect?

An important feature in this programme is practical problem solving in multi-disciplinary teams using current and emerging technologies. You will learn to transform 2D graphics into 3D and incorporate them into games, mobile application and computer programmes.

What will I learn?

In the first year, students will usually learn the basics of computing and programming subjects. Gradually in the following semesters, they will be exposed to more specialised multimedia subjects such as Multimedia Authoring, Digital Audio and Video, Multimedia Programming, Digital Imaging, Computer Animation and such.

Students will learn and practise to use multimedia authoring tools such as Adobe applications (Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator and such) to edit various media accordingly to create multimedia presentation, simple games, information kiosks, websites, animation and many other interactive applications.

Why is this course a smart choice?

Because of its usefulness in today’s technologically advanced society, multimedia is among the most popular fields of study in IT for its interesting range of subjects and career prospects. As multimedia becomes increasingly important to businesses, both from marketing and operational standpoints, opportunities in this field continue to grow.

What can I do?

Upon graduation, students can begin their successful careers in various industries, such as multimedia design and development, graphics design, web design, advertisement, entertainment production and such. Being in this field and working in this area allows graduates to balance their creative side with their skills in technology. Hand drawings and computer-generated images are both used in this line of work.

How do I start?

If you are a school-leaver who has just completed your SPM, O-Levels and equivalent, you can opt to go for the Foundation in Arts or Diploma in Visual and Interactive Media. For those who have STPM, A-Levels and equivalent, you can start on Bachelor of Multimedia (Hons).
