Mak­ing qual­ity ed­u­ca­tion af­ford­able

FIRST City UC has an ex­cel­lent track record in pro­duc­ing qual­ity grad­u­ates who are able to cre­ate in­no­va­tive de­signs and add value to peo­ple’s lives.

The in­sti­tu­tion takes pride in its de­sign pro­grammes that of­fer holis­tic de­sign ed­u­ca­tion – com­bin­ing its ex­pe­ri­ence in run­ning UK fran­chised pro­grammes for over 20 years, har­ness­ing on the vast knowl­edge and teach­ing abil­ity of its aca­demic staff and com­ple­ment­ing it with state-of-the-art fa­cil­i­ties and equip­ment such as 3D print­ers, laser cut­ter and Macintosh lab­o­ra­to­ries.

At the Fac­ulty of De­sign and Built En­vi­ron­ment, First City UC of­fers Foun­da­tion in Art & De­sign pro­gramme with path­ways to pur­sue fur­ther un­der­grad­u­ate stud­ies in Graphic De­sign, In­te­rior Ar­chi­tec­ture and De­sign and Fur­ni­ture and Prod­uct De­sign.

Dur­ing the one-year pro­gramme, stu­dents will be ex­posed to a gen­eral art and de­sign ed­u­ca­tion to en­able them to gain ex­pe­ri­ence and knowl­edge in prac­ti­cal stu­dio work, 2D- and 3D de­sign, re­search and writ­ing skills for de­sign.

The mod­ules are spe­cially crafted to de­velop skills in vis­ual anal­y­sis, fun­da­men­tal draw­ing, colour stud­ies, re­search and crit­i­cal writ­ing skills.

Once stu­dents com­plete the course, they would be able to start Year 1 of the de­gree pro­gramme of their choice. Al­ter­na­tively, stu­dents with strong in­ter­est and in­cli­na­tion for art and de­sign can opt to pur­sue spe­cialised two-year diploma pro­grammes in In­ter­ac­tive De­sign and In­te­rior De­sign.

Upon grad­u­a­tion, they pos­sess an ad­vanced stand­ing to con­tinue to Year 2 of any de­sign de­gree pro­gramme at First City UC.

Strong in­dus­try col­lab­o­ra­tion

The fac­ulty is well known for its col­lab­o­ra­tion with rep­utable uni­ver­si­ties in the United King­dom and strong in­dus­trial link­ages.

It pro­vides real-life ex­pe­ri­ence in the in­dus­try by pro­vid­ing the best learn­ing ex­pe­ri­ence for stu­dents, al­low­ing them to ex­plore and work on ac­tual projects out­side the usual theatre lec­tures.

For ex­am­ple, the Graphic De­sign de­part­ment ar­ranges an­nual over­seas de­sign study trips, dur­ing which stu­dents par­tic­i­pate in work­shops con­ducted by host uni­ver­si­ties.

Stu­dents’ ex­pe­ri­ence is en­hanced through par­tic­i­pa­tion in com­pe­ti­tions both lo­cally and in­ter­na­tion­ally, where they have emerged as reg­u­lar win­ners of de­sign awards and ac­co­lades such as the MIID Reka Awards, Nip­pon Paint’s Asia Young De­signer Award and more.

Zero fees to start foun­da­tion stud­ies

Stu­dents wish­ing to pur­sue the foun­da­tion pro­gramme can take ad­van­tage of the all-in-one pack­age of­fer – if they regis­ter for any foun­da­tion pro­grammes at First City UC and com­mit to con­tinue with bach­e­lor’s de­gree at the in­sti­tu­tion, they would be able to start their foun­da­tion classes at zero tu­ition fees for the first se­mes­ter.

First City UC will fur­ther give a 30% dis­count off the first se­mes­ter’s tu­ition fees when the stu­dents con­tinue their de­gree pro­grammes af­ter com­plet­ing the foun­da­tion cour­ses.

New pro­grammes

To keep abreast with the con­stant changes in the in­dus­try, First City UC’s Fac­ulty of De­sign and Built En­vi­ron­ment will in­tro­duce new pro­grammes; such as BA (Hons) Fur­ni­ture & Prod­uct De­sign, BA (Hons) Graphic De­sign and BA (Hons) In­te­rior Ar­chi­tec­ture & De­sign; in col­lab­o­ra­tion with UK’s renowned Manch­ester Metropoli­tan Uni­ver­sity.

The fac­ulty is also rolling out its very own Master of De­sign Man­age­ment; aimed at sup­port­ing em­ploy­a­bil­ity and em­ployer en­gage­ment by de­vel­op­ing both trans­fer­able and in­dus­try spe­cific high-level skills.

Stu­dents can en­joy this “in­au­gu­ral in­cen­tive” avail­able if they regis­ter soon.

July Open Day

With the aim of mak­ing qual­ity ed­u­ca­tion af­ford­able and ac­ces­si­ble to all, First City UC of­fers var­i­ous schol­ar­ships, in­cen­tives, dis­counts and tu­ition fee waivers.

Stu­dents in­ter­ested to pur­sue their stud­ies can visit the cam­pus dur­ing the Open Day on July 22 and 23 to talk to its mar­ket­ing staff on special in­cen­tives dur­ing Open Day, the early bird dis­count, in­au­gu­ral in­cen­tives for new pro­grammes and other special pro­mo­tions.

Vis­i­tors will also be able to par­tic­i­pate in in­ter­ac­tive ac­tiv­i­ties, meet the aca­demic staff for pro­gramme coun­selling and tour the new fa­cil­i­ties in the cam­pus.

Col­lab­o­ra­tion with or­gan­i­sa­tions such as Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Fur­ni­ture In­dus­try As­so­ci­a­tion (KLSFIA) en­sures stu­dents are kept up-to-date with the cur­rent in­dus­try trends, needs and de­mands.

Stu­dents’ art­works are put on public dis­play dur­ing the an­nual grad­u­ate show­case such as Se­quence, which prospec­tive em­ploy­ers of­ten at­tend.
