Highly reputable place to study

-

MELAKA-Manipal Medical College is highly regarded as a medical school of outstanding repute in Malaysia. This homegrown institution is a branch campus of renowned Manipal University, India, the latter by itself being an icon of quality education and healthcare in India over the last 64 years.

MMMC has always placed emphasis on the quality, with a capital “Q” in its delivery of education. This persistent and continuously driven mindset in continual upgrading the quality of its services has led to MMMC earning its well-deserved reputation as a premier medical school.

Having established the MBBS and BDS courses, MMMC has commenced the Foundation in Science (FIS) programme in January 2012 with the objective of delivering better prepared students into medicine and dental studies. With this in mind, the one-year programme was developed in-house with the aim of streaming students into Melaka-Manipal’s own degrees.

What differentiates the FIS and gives it the proverbial “oomph” is a foray into subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Science and Oral Biology in addition to traditional subjects such as Biology and Chemistry. When students get into their eventual MBBS and BDS studies, the learning curve doesn’t seem that steep.

MMMC provides a blended learning opportunity for the students right from the foundation level. POSMED – a compulsory assignment/competition, is a brilliant learning and assessment tool, which is showcased through a poster featuring the students’ research on medical devices from the aspects of Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Clinical Correlation.

Since its maiden debut in 2012, POSMED has been a high-quality learning platform for knowledge and experience exchange between faculty and students.

MMMC chief executive Prof Dr Jaspal Singh Sahota constantly provides the appropriate amount of direction and feedback to ensure high-level team performance in the FIS programme.

Based on the minute-to-minute guidance of FIS Programme head Dr Rashmirekha Sahoo as well as the dedication of the highly motivated and selfless organising committee, POSMED has undertaken positive transformation and major facelifts.

From the incorporation of PowerPoint presentations to role-plays and step-by-step demonstration, POSMED has been consistently and continuously playing its part as an all-rounded learning opportunity provider.

The most recent POSMED with the 14th batch of FIS students is evidently one-of-akind, as it was the inaugural attempt for students to produce a prototype to complement their posters. Creativity was key as a budget was set. However, the tight budget did not limit the students’ imagination as they cleverly salvaged scrap materials to build their prototype from scratch. This new and innovative format has indeed elevated POSMED to a whole new level of intellectual experience.

The atmosphere of POSMED is always a mixture of thrill and anxiety. Apart from ensuring a flawless presentation of their poster content and role-play via PowerPoint or prototype, students also have to engage in an intense battle of the wits during the question and answer session. Knowing best that effort always trumps luck and talent, the FIS faculty, especially the Semester One lecturers are ever ready to mentor the students in their POSMED endeavour and share their wealth of knowledge to better equip the students to meet head-to-head with the jury panel.

On top of that, students put forth their best and are eager to emerge victorious as winners of the Best Poster and Best Prototype categories and be handsomely rewarded with prizes.

As a commemoration of the FIS Batch 14 students’ effort and creativity, as well as to offer the campus community a glimpse of POSMED, the organising committee took the initiative to set up a POSMED 14 Posters and Prototype Exhibition at the campus. This exhibition provides snippets and highlights of POSMED 14 to those who were unable to witness the actual event day.

POSMED proved to be so much fun as it instilled soft skills and perseverance to succeed and was a good platform to prepare young minds for holistic excellence through experiential learning.

Those who wish their children to have a head start as a medical professional would do very well to put them on the right path by signing up for the FIS at Melaka-Manipal.

A visit to MMMC is highly recommended – its staff is ever-willing to show off the campus to anyone willing to take their time to drive to Melaka.

Applications can now be submitted online at www.manipal.edu/melaka for the FIS (July intake) and MBBS (October intake).

■ Those unable to drive to Melaka may call 06-289 6662 or directly e-mail queries to info@manipal.edu.my.
