Sequence-ing outstanding designs
A TOTAL of 108 design students from First City University College teamed up to present the 15th edition of SEQUENCE, the annual graduation showcase for the Faculty of Design and Built Environment held recently.
From the first weekend of July, the public and visitors at 1 Utama Shopping Centre were able to view the students’ final year projects from the BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design and BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design programmes.
The launch of the showcase was well attended by First City UC’s executive management team, academic staff, representatives from Nottingham Trent University UK, Guest of Honour, Datuk Eric Lee and the delegates from Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Furniture Industry Association (KLSFIA), industry key players and prospective employers.
All the display works were carefully curated and compiled based on the theme “Beyond The Limit”, which epitomises the students’ sacrifices and willingness to work beyond their normal limits to go the extra mile to achieve their goals.
First City UC takes pride in its design programmes, which offer holistic design education combining its experience in running UK franchised programmes for over 20 years and harnessing the vast knowledge and teaching ability of its academic staff complemented by state-of-the-art facilities and equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutter and Macintosh laboratories.
Additionally, the Faculty of Design and Built Environment is well known for its strong industrial linkages, which provide real-life experience in the industry in its efforts to provide the best learning experience for students, allowing them to explore and work on actual projects outside the usual classroom lectures.
It works closely with the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA), Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) and KLSFIA in co-hosting events, participating in exhibitions organised by the associations and attending various talks and workshops held in collaboration with these partners.
Students’ learning experience is further enhanced through internship opportunities in the faculty’s partners’ associate companies, training programmes and modules developed with First City UC’s industry partners, participation in competitions both locally and internationally, where they have emerged as regular winners of design awards and accolades such as the MIID Reka Awards, Nippon Paint’s Asia Young Designer Award and more.
Starting this year, the faculty offers a new postgraduate degree programme – Master of Design Management – to complement and provide options for higher studies in addition to the existing foundation, diploma and degree programmes currently available.
Practising designers and degree holders are encouraged to take advantage of this new course, as it provides them skills in design management, which can help expand their knowledge through related fields in branding, design thinking, entrepreneurship and design innovation.
With this myriad of skills, graduates will be able to advance themselves and secure senior management positions in the design field.
In 2018, two new programmes will be added to the increasing list of education pathways being offered by the faculty as First City UC adapts to the changing demands of the design industry – Diploma in Graphic Design and BA (Hons) in Fashion Marketing.
Students are welcome to visit the campus during the next Open Day on Aug 12, 13, 19 and 20 from 10am to 6pm.
Registration is open for intakes in August, September and October for various programmes at diploma and degree levels.
Students who register before Aug 14 are entitled to enjoy the limited 50% Early Bird discount off their tuition fees (terms and conditions apply).
Visitors will be able to check out First City UC’s new facilities and meet the academic staff to get in-depth information about programmes and enquire about scholarships, incentives and tuition fee waivers during the Open Day.
The attentive counsellors are available to attend to any queries during Extended Counselling, which lasts until Aug 27.
