Graduates of the degree at Reading’s UK campus are renowned for rapid progression to senior positions within the construction industry in consultancy and contracting firms.

“What makes our quantity surveying degree so unique is that we teach students how to apply the BIM programme, which enables students to plan the timeline of a building’s construction, calculate all the stages of a product or building’s lifecycle and determine the costs involved.

“The industry nowadays relies on the use of such digital technology, hence we integrate the BIM technology into 40% of our curriculum.

“We also encourage our students to take up a placement during their vacation period to get some practical experience before they graduate. They are given the opportunity to study part of their degree at the UK campus to gain experience learning in a different environment and collaborating with counterparts from abroad,” says associate professor and head of built environment at UoRM Dr Mohd Faris Khamidi.

During the first two years of the programme, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the disciplines, which underpin construction management and the surveying professions such as economics, law, industry practice and building technology.

Recurring themes throughout the course include the application of digital technologies and internationalisation.

There is a strong focus on project work and interdisciplinary collaboration. For example, during the second year, students will work collaboratively to complete four sets of multidisciplinary projects.

Furthermore, a strong focus is placed on employability and students are given the opportunity to network with industry professionals throughout the programme.

During the final year, students will develop knowledge of construction economics and contract law with a focus on managing costs throughout the project life cycle.

Students will also complete a dissertation on a research topic of their choice and a quantity surveying project in which they will prepare a design cost plan.

Additionally, students can explore areas of interest through optional modules on subjects such as human resource management, digital practices in construction and international construction.

UoRM will be hosting open days this weekend from 10am to 4pm to give prospective students and parents a guided tour of the university’s modern facilities such as the science laboratories, computer suites, a BIM lounge, clinics for counselling and a dealing room with computers containing real-time trading simulation software for finance and business management students.

Application for the September intake is in progress.
