Beyond theoretical knowledge

STUDENTS who are looking to venture into an exciting and rewarding career in the hospitality and tourism industry can now pursue programmes at Quest International University Perak (QIUP).

The areas related to tourism, hospitality, events and culinary arts offer huge opportunities for a rewarding career in management in Malaysia as well as overseas.

Tourism, together with travel, is now regarded as the world’s fastest growing industry. Being part of the service industry, hospitality and tourism provides a wide range of career opportunities in a variety of industrial sectors, such as hotels, travel and tours, airlines, cruise liners, theme parks and other service-related industries.

QIUP realises that the hospitality and tourism industry is in continuous need of well-trained and capable managerial staff. Its core syllabus, which is purely market driven, prepares graduates academically to work in a professional and people-oriented environment while ensuring that they are well equipped with the right skills and knowledge.

QIUP’s Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Hospitality and Tourism Management is a good manifestation of quality based on the feedback from industry experts. The university has also introduced the Diploma in Hotel Management programme. Studying these programmes at QIUP will equip students with the necessary skills to manage a variety of service-related operations.

The programmes give a broad coverage of practices in the hospitality industry through coursework content, which is reinforced with soft skills. The internship involves hands-on training on the multiple facets of hotel management.

An integral part of the programme is the development of communication and interpersonal skills that will have an impact on the career paths of the graduates.

QIUP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with various hotels such as Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut in Lumut, Syeun Hotel in Ipoh and Copthorne Hotel in Cameron Highlands.

The MoU with Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut is to ensure the hospitality and tourism management students have access to training opportunities available in hotels, resorts and other hospitality-related industries. General manager of Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut, Patrick Tee, who is also the industry advisor for QIUP, says that QIUP’s syllabus for the hospitality programme is comprehensive.

The MoU with Syeun Hotel was signed by managing director of Syeun Hotel Maggie Ong and chief operating officer of QIUP Nicholas Goh.

“I am very pleased that QIUP has taken a proactive stance in ensuring that the graduates are well-rounded. There is an increase in students pursuing hospitality and tourism-related programmes in the market at present due to the demand from the industry.

However, these graduates come only with theoretical knowledge and do not have sufficient practical knowledge,” said Ong at the signing ceremony.

She added that young graduates lack the required practical knowledge and skills to fit into management positions. She was delighted to see that QIUP is working towards ensuring graduates are employable by acquiring the necessary theoretical and practical experience through the signing of the MoU.

QIUP students pursuing the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Diploma in Hotel Management will undergo three to four months of industrial training as part of their curriculum.

The degree and diploma programmes in QIUP provide global, industry-specific and quality education at an affordable fee. Besides full-time study, these programmes are also offered on part-time basis for working professionals who are motivated to upgrade their qualifications, knowledge and employability.
