Think business, think Henley

-

FOUNDED in 1945, the Henley Business School (HBS) is the first business school to be established in the United Kingdom and is one of the oldest and most respected schools in Europe.

HBS is among an elite group of business schools and is consistently ranked among the world’s top 50 business schools by the Financial Times and The Economist.

As part of the University of Reading, HBS operates within an academic institution that is placed within the top 200 of all global universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016/17 and QS World University Rankings 2018.

The Malaysian campus of Henley was formally opened in February 2016 and just last month, it was proud to graduate its first cohort of students who completed their degrees in BSc Finance and Business Management.

HBS is also the only university in Malaysia to be triple accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), EMFD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for the quality and capability of its faculty and output and one of only a few in Asia Pacific with this status.

HBS Malaysia offers students a broad understanding of business with thematic emphases (big data, digital technology, and analytics).

Students can choose to specialise in accounting, real estate, investment banking and finance including Islamic finance.

This will enable graduates to gain the competitive edge through HBS’ global brand and networks of alumni, its future focused curriculum, practical and contextually relevant content, and analytical and results-orientated behaviours.

The courses offered in HBS Malaysia are BA Management and Business, BSc Finance and Business Management, BSc Accounting and Finance, BSc Real Estate, MSc in Investment Banking and Islamic Science, the Henley MBA (a flexible executive MBA) and a PhD in Business and Management.

The programmes taught at HBS Malaysia have global recognition and students can experience the best of both worlds – gaining a British qualification while studying in Asia.

Students are also given the choice to study part of their degree at HBS in the UK.

This opportunity enables students to collaborate with their counterparts and gain exposure to other cultures. Students who study at HBS Malaysia will graduate with a degree from the University of Reading, UK.

The programmes offered at HBS Malaysia serve as a bridge between appreciation of Western business models and immersion into Asian business culture and the school recognises the importance of regulatory, societal and cultural factors in global business contexts.

HBS Malaysia head Prof Teck Yong Eng said most academics at the school are research active and have had their findings published in peer-reviewed academic journals and these own materials can be used for teaching purposes to enable students to be wellinformed on the most recent, cutting-edge research in a particular area.

“Our research-led teaching means we emphasis on current knowledge, which is achieved through objective research using scientific methods.

“Many business schools focus only on teaching business, but we aim to create impact in the industry and to be relevant to policy makers. Most of our lecturers have connections with industry captains or people in the financial and real estate fields and small to medium enterprises,” he said.

Eng added that programmes in HBS Malaysia reach out to local and regional economic needs and address global business issues.

Its accounting and finance degree is accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), which enhances the employability of the students and facilitates further studies to be professional accountants.

Its MSc Investment Banking and Islamic Finance on the other hand, is delivered in partnership with the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF).

“We live in a world which is very much interconnected. Our business school understands the growing significance of Asia in the global economy and in geopolitical areas.

“We would like to play a leadership role in this area – to connect Asia with the West. We have an advantage as we have a longstanding reputation as a top business school in the UK.

“We have a strong understanding of Western business models which we can test in a local and regional context here in Asia. We acknowledge that Asia is the fastest growing continent with a lot of capital development and need for good talent – skilled people who are business-minded; those with analytical mindsets and good business knowledge are highly sought after in this region and I see great potential for our students in this respect,” Eng stressed.

He added that students at HBS Malaysia can expect faculty members’ dedication to relevance, impact and currency of the degree programmes.

Lecturers have substantial industry experience and have held or still hold senior management positions. There are also faculty members flying in from the UK campus to teach.

Meanwhile, Eng also said that students are encouraged to go out to seek industrial placements as those who had internships tend to have greater confidence and were more appealing to employers because of their work experience.

Many of HBS Malaysia’s first cohort of graduates have secured employment in various national and international organisations, benefitting from their industrial placements with major organisations such as the Transport Ministry, Accenture, Forest City and Frost & Sullivan.

HBS’ global presence and international reach is evident in a number of ways such as its 150 academic faculty from 18 countries of whom are widely published in their field, being the world’s third largest provider of MBA education delivering in the UK and nine international locations, 5,000 students from more than 100 countries studying at HBS, an alumni family of more than 70,000 members across the globe and its international network of associates and collaborative partners.

HBS Malaysia at the University of Reading Malaysia in EduCity is open to applications for the Sept 25 intake for undergraduate programmes in Accounting and Finance, Finance and Business Management, Real Estate and Business and Management.
