Success in national pharmacy examination

-

THE School of Pharmacy recorded the highest passing rate of all universities whose pharmacy students took the national Qualifying Examination for Registration as a Practicing Pharmacist in June 2017.

A total of 860 students from 13 higher educational Institutions registered for this examination. Of these, 116 IMU Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) students passed this examination. On Aug 1, these students received their certificates from dean of school Associate Prof Mohd Zulkefeli.

Held three times a year by the Pharmacy Board of Malaysia, the qualifying examination is an assessment of candidates’ knowledge and ability to apply Malaysian laws regulating the sale and supply of medicinal products from pharmacies.

As this knowledge is important for safe pharmacy practice, passing the Qualifying Examination is a prerequisite for pharmacy graduates who wish to register as pharmacists with the Pharmacy Board.

The school consistently supports its students in their preparation for all examinations, including this one. This commitment to quality education enabled the School to achieve full five-year re-accreditation of its BPharm programme, awarded by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency in January 2016.

A revised and improved BPharm curriculum will be rolled out for the next intake of students into the BPharm programme, in August and September 2017.

“This achievement results from the quality of the curriculum designed for the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme and the teaching and learning strategies implemented by our academic staff,” said the dean.

“Most importantly, our programme is aimed at producing work-ready graduates.”

IMU’s Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) students have the option to transfer credits in their first two years’ curriculum to the pharmacy programme in the University of Otago, New Zealand or University of Tasmania, Australia.

These international partnerships are a clear testament of the alignment of IMU’s innovative education to global standards.

Students also could complete the entire four-year pharmacy degree in IMU. The next commencement for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme is in September 2017. Those who want to take on a diverse career involving the safe and effective use of medicines can make an online application today to study IMU’s pharmacy programme.

Those who just completed their SPM and do not have pre-university qualification can consider enrolling in the one-year IMU Foundation in Science (FiS). It is the preferred foundation and direct route for entry into any of IMU’s degree programmes.

Prospective students can also find out more about the FiS and other programmes at the Open Day, Aug 27, at the Bukit Jalil campus, Kuala Lumpur.

The university will be open 10am to 4pm to showcase its programmes, campus and facilities to interested students and parents.

Those who cannot attend that Open Day can still meet IMU’s faculty members during its Info Days; held from 10am to 4pm, on Aug 26 in Grand Paragon Hotel, Johor Baru and Hyatt Regency, Kota Kinabalu; as well as Aug 27 in Hotel Jen, Penang and Riverside Majestic Kuching.
