Celebrating achievements
THE University of Southampton has celebrated the achievements of the first Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates to complete their degrees via the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus.
Attending ceremonies in Southampton, the graduates were the first to begin the MEng programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) after two years of study at the university’s Malaysia Campus at the EduCity Iskandar development in Johor, Malaysia before transferring to the United Kingdom (the UK).
A further group of MEng graduates – the second group to complete their studies in Mechanical Engineering via the Malaysia Campus has also been honoured this year.
Among the Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates were a group who benefited from prestigious Lloyd’s Register Foundation scholarships, awarded annually to top performing students from the Malaysia Campus.
“I feel very honoured to be able to join this group in graduating,” said MEng EEE graduate Stephen Chai Ming Han who plans to return to Malaysia to start a new job with Intel.
“Being the first group of EEE graduates from the Malaysia Campus is special. We’ve been through a different experience and a lot of changes compared to other students, but this will definitely help give us more experience to deal with things in future.”
Fellow MEng EEE graduate Wen Yee Tey added, “I think it’s great because you get to experience two different study environments. In Malaysia, the student community is relatively small but here in Southampton, you get to know a lot more people from different countries.”
Malaysia Campus Academic Affairs head Prof Neil Stephen referenced his own educational experience in praising this year’s graduating class, “Going to university is meant to be transformative. I was the first member of my family to ever go to university. I’ve made a success of that experience and it’s lovely to see these students doing the same thing with their careers. This year, as with last year, all the MEng graduates have got a first or a 2:1 which is really good.”
A 2017 MEng graduate in Mechanical Engineering Aaron Leong enthused about the positive aspects of his MalaysiaSouthampton experience and recommends it to others wishing to follow in his footsteps, “If you like something different, something that creates a very unique identity, I highly suggest it. If you want to get a cookie-cutter degree then no, but this programme has definitely shaped my outlook on life, my thinking and maturity in a way I think many others would not have and I have no regrets.”
University of Southampton Malaysia Campus chief executive officer Prof John
I feel proud to see our first group of MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering students graduate and our second group of MEng Mechanical Engineering follow them just a few days later. It is a fantastic milestone for our Malaysia Campus.
McBride concluded, “I feel proud to see our first group of MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering students graduate and our second group of MEng Mechanical Engineering follow them just a few days later. It is a fantastic milestone for our Malaysia Campus and a marvellous achievement for these graduates, most of whom now move on to excellent jobs in their respective fields in the UK, Malaysia and further afield.”
