IT is evident from the overwhelming array of products catering to dry and very dry skin in supermarket and pharmacy shelves that the masses are in need of a solution for dry skin. Now, Malaysians will meet a new champion for troubled skins nationwide.

Linola is a well-loved pharmaceutical skincare range developed by Dr August Wolff in Germany since 1957 and has continually gone through countless research and development exercises over the decades.

Today, it is the No.1 preferred medical skincare range by paediatricians in Germany.

In 1905, chemist and pharmacist Dr August Wolff founded his own company in Bielefeld, Germany, and invented a number of medical products.

Dr Kurt Wolff joined his father in 1937 and his first product innovation resulted in preparations containing linoleic acid. He researched this field for many years.

It was well known even back in the days of Dr August Wolff that the body should be supplied with linoleic acid, just like it has to be provided with vitamins from food to stay healthy. This idea resulted in a formulation created in 1938 that is now widely known.

It was named “Linola”, the one with linoleic acid. This active substance is partly responsible for keeping the outermost skin layer sealed from the inside to prevent too much moisture from escaping.

Named after its key ingredient, Linola is not just another run-of-the-mill range of products made for dry skin.

Out of the many essential fatty acids available, linoleic acid was specifically chosen as it is one of the longest chain essential fatty acids available for the skin. The longer the chain, the better it is for your skin’s natural barrier.

Moisturising and soothing effect

For dry, rough, cracked and sensitive skin – the Linola range provides a moisturising and soothing effect that would aid in relieving discomfort, dryness and itchiness associated with dry skin conditions.

For rough, dry, cracked and sensitive skin, the Linola range provides a moisturising and soothing effect that would aid in relieving discomfort and dryness associated with dry skin conditions.

The Linola Lotion – the star product in the range – is formulated with essential linoleic acids, developed especially for all forms of dry and stressed skin. It contains linoleic acid rich vegetable oil and is free from harmful mineral oils and silicones.

Linola Lotion is most suitable for very rough, dry, cracked and sensitive skin.

Its No.1 standing in Germany under the best supportive medical care category for all types of dry skin in 2012, 2013 and 2016 is testimony to the product’s efficacy.

For other conditions such as dry and scalp discomfort, Linola Forte Shampoo does wonders as it contains unique ingredients such as Sichuan pepper plant extract, menthol and essential linoleic acid to relieve discomfort and replace the essential fatty acid barrier on the surface of the skin.

The company’s medical information manager Dr Manuel Hauser explains that the protective layer of the skin can be “worn off” by frequent showering with hot water and extensive use of soaps, climate conditions such as long exposure to air conditioning, as well as due to the ageing process.

Protecting the skin

“To protect the skin against barrier breakdown and depletion of lipids and moisture, constant replenishment of lipids and other essential components of healthy skin is vital,” said Dr Hauser at the Linola Skin Care Workshop held in Subang Jaya recently.

“The body cannot produce linoleic acid on its own. Like a vitamin, it must be substituted on a regular basis to maintain healthy skin,” Dr Hauser added.
