Biotechnology career beckons

-

BIOTECHNOLOGY is touted as one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. Expected to contribute greatly to the country’s gross domestic product by 2020, biotechnology continues to impact our daily lives.

This growing industry has seen many developments in the past few years and is apt for those wishing to dive deep into the world of genetics and biochemistry.

The Malaysian Government recognises biotechnology as one of the key strategic drivers to propel the country’s social and economic development in pursuit of the status of a developed nation.

With the launch of the National Biotechnology Policy (NBP) in 2005, focusing primarily on three economic sectors – agriculture, healthcare and industrial manufacturing – biopharmaceuticals and biogenetics became a new frontier for major corporations in this field.

Students keen on a career in biotechnology need not venture far as Manipal International University’s (MIU) courses in biotechnology are designed to provide graduates with a solid understanding of science and technology with added entrepreneurial skills.

The Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) (Hons) at MIU, Nilai, provides an overview of the biotechnology industry and common techniques used in research and development. Graduates are trained to fuse their technical expertise with a keen understanding of this fast-paced industry.

MIU believes that it is imperative for each student to go beyond the corridors of the lecture halls. With its strong partnerships and business connections, students are given the opportunity to learn while they study via the industry internships provided.

Through this programme, each student is given the chance to put knowledge gained into a real-life working environment. With 13 global academic partners, they can also opt for credit transfer programmes with participating universities.

MIU degrees are approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Higher Education Ministry. The university is also a partner of the Industry Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology by the Malaysian Education Ministry.

Spread over 142 acres (574,653sq m) in the university town of Nilai, MIU’s lush green campus offers an academic environment designed to bring out the best in its students.

After completing their initial years, students have the flexibility to further their studies in the country of their choice as the twinning programme at MIU allows students to complete their degree programmes abroad.

As part of its offer, MIU is providing up to 100% scholarship* on tuition for the foundation programme for students who get straight As in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). A semester’s tuition fee will be waived if they progress to undergraduate programmes at MIU, Nilai.

For the diploma programmes, students with three credits for their SPM will receive 40% scholarship*, while students enrolling in the degree programmes are offered up to 50% scholarship* based on their CGPA.
