Making music

-

MUSICAL instruments are objects used to produce sounds.

They are classified by how sounds are produced, such as percussion, string, keyboard, wind and electronic.

The sounds made by an instrument are affected by various factors, such as the material it’s made from, its size and shape, and the way it is played.

For example, ukulele, violin and electric guitar are string instruments; they produce sound when struck, plucked or bowed.

Recently, we asked Starchild readers to send in letters on the topic: My Favourite Musical Instrument.

Here’s what they say. Taneshwari Kovellan, 10, says his favourite instrument is the piano. “The piano is an acoustic musical instrument and has rows of white and black keys. I enjoy playing the piano. I go to piano class every weekend.”

Eight-year-old Dayang Nur Salsabilla says: “My favourite musical instrument is called a gong. It is a Malay musical instrument. We play the gong during Malay weddings. This is the culture of our country. I hope everyone likes to play the gong.”

Natalie Ang Xin Yan, six, writes: “I like to play the ukulele. The ukulele is fun and makes a nice sound. I like to go to ukulele class.”

Rhianna Tan Yi Jun, 10, says: “The harp makes a beautiful sound. The music is gentle and relaxing. It is a beautiful instrument.”

Six-year-old Tharun Kandasamy says: “I like to play drums. I love the sound produced by the instrument.”
