Ipoh’s late night tales

-

IPOH isn’t going to bed early this weekend. The Other Festival, which celebrates the arts, music and heritage stories, will see to that.

The Ipoh Old Town and Kinta Riverwalk areas will host most of the festival’s programme, including busking, poetry sessions, mime events, night walk tours, theatre shows and supper sessions. Light projection and installations are also a part of this festival.

This is the third edition of The Other Festival, which is part of the Perak Festival of Ideas.

Today’s hightlights include the Kata Kota Kita lit-based event (Blackout Poetry and Writing Through Illustration) at the Sepaloh Art Centre (5.30pm and 9pm), the Temporary Theatre’s performance of Gadis Jalan Burmah (8pm) at KooKee Ipoh Old Town and the popular Spooky Bus: Don’t Disturb The Driver ride, which welcomes 30 people on a bus for a 10km ride around Ipoh, involving haunted tales and scary drama on board. Spooky Bus departs from Plan B, Kong Heng at 9pm tonight. Book your seats at bit.ly/spookybus.

Tomorrow will see the Kata Kota Kita event Mime And Poetry (5.30pm and 9pm) taking place at Sepaloh Art Centre, while the experimental-minded Ipoh Urban Cinema presents a cinematic spectacle at Padang Ipoh at 8pm. You can expect homegrown short films and snippets to be projected onto the wall surfaces of Yasmin at Kong Heng and the nearby shophouses at Padang Ipoh.

The Spooky Bus: Don’t Disturb The Driver ride will also be running tomorrow at the same venue and time.

If you just want to hang out and take in some music early on, the Buskers After Dark programme (5pm) at Ipoh Old Town and Kinta Riverwalk is something to consider. This weekend sees musicians and bands like Hafiz Chai, Radiowave, BloodyMary, Meor Hailree, Shizuka and others in action.

Elsewhere, if you need a late night stroll filled with Ipoh history and anecdotes, don’t miss Ipoh Larut Malam, a walking tour with Ipoh-based retired naval commander Ian Anderson. The walk starts at 10pm tonight and tomorrow. Gathering point is FMS Bar And Restaurant.

All events are free admission. The Other Festival, curated by Kakiseni, is a collaboration with Ipoh’s arts community.
