WHILE it is more convenient to eat out, the food might be less nutritious and it gets expensive if done regularly. To address this dilemma, Rinnai has developed the revolutionary Lotus Burner. Featuring the world’s first “double deck” design, it has won the 2012 HOMEDEC Good Design Award – its third award following the 2009 Japan Good Design Award and 2009 Taiwan Good Design Product Award.

“A typical gas burner in homes has a flame rating of 4.2 kilowatts (kW), with at least 40% heat efficiency,” says Rinnai marketing manager Jean Se.

“It means the burner requires a gas input of 4.2kW and only 40% of the heat produced goes into the pot or wok.”

Rinnai has raised the bar with Lotus. While using 4.2kW of gas, this breakthrough burner has a heat efficiency of 50% – less heat escapes from the wok, resulting in faster cooking times without requiring more gas.

An internal test revealed that Rinnai’s Lotus burner took 257 seconds to heat up two litres of water, whereas a conventional burner took 336 seconds. This shows that Lotus uses less gas but performs better than conventional burners with a higher flame rating.

“Home cooks can cook faster without having to pay for more gas – the best of both worlds,” says Se.

Apart from high heat efficiency, the fully sealed burner, double deck design of Lotus allows for minimal cleaning and maintenance. Instead of the conventional design of a separate inner ring for simmering with its smaller flame and outer ring for deep- or stir-frying, Lotus stacks up the two rings in a double deck fashion.

Simmering is done by the lower deck flame, whereas stir-frying uses both the upper and lower deck flames.

A single burner eliminates the need for a drip pan, burner ring and burner cap, so there are fewer parts to wash. The full seal also prevents any liquid overflowing, so a wipe on the surface will suffice. In addition, the RB-37GF gas hob that features Lotus is ideal for frying and boiling simultaneously.

Consisting of Lotus and two single burners arranged in a T-shape, the placement provides the space and capacity for a 40cm wok and two 23cm pots to be used simultaneously. As each burner is equipped with a flame failure safety device, any gas leaks or sudden flame loss will result in an automatic cut-off of gas supply.

“Apart from helping home cooks save time and money, a 4.2kW input with 50% efficiency means it uses less gas and releases less carbon dioxide than similiar models,” Se says.

“Recent Rinnai products aim to fulfil the concept of ‘Greennovation’– a combination of innovative and environmentalfriendly technology. All these goals are achieved without compromising performance.”
