Enriching balance at Nilai U
WHILE her peers relish the thought of pursuing their tertiary education after their SPM, Joanna Shee was plagued with feelings of hopelessness.
“My father passed away from leukaemia when I was 16. My mother was left to raise me and my two younger siblings on her own,” said Shee.
However, a full scholarship offered by Nilai University (Nilai U) had turned Shee’s life around.
Having completed her degree in Biotechnology, the lass from SMK Simpang Rengam had recently graduated among tops of her class in August this year.
“I cherish the opportunity given to me by Nilai U and I used every moment during my degree to be the very best that I could in both my academic and extracurricular endeavours,” Shee added.
Shee explained that Nilai U is a special university because of its green and peaceful campus.
“Many people take this for granted but a peaceful campus environment help students thrive,” she emphasised.
The conducive study environment complemented by a team of dedicated and passionate lecturers was a motivation for Shee to excel in her studies.
“I am grateful to all my lecturers who tirelessly prepared my friends and I for the future,” said Shee.
“They were always generous with their time and they consistently went beyond the call of duty to assist us.
“Their guidance and pastoral care gave me the confidence to explore the many different academic and extracurricular activities available on campus,” added Shee.
Shee emphasised that it allowed her to excel in her studies and hone personal skills.
Shee cited that the most important skill she acquired during her time at Nilai U was balance.
“I realised that a university education is not only used for the acquisition of knowledge,” said Shee.
“More importantly, a good university is a place where one equips one’s self with soft skills.”
In addition to her classroom commitments, Shee also took part in clubs and societies where she improved her leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
“Nilai U is the only university that offers courses conducted by renowned organisations such as Dale Carnegie and Outward Bound,” she said.
Shee also explained that students were awarded certificates upon completion of the courses.
Shee was quick to point out that while she enjoyed her extracurricular activities, she ensured that she maintained a good academic standing.
“My experience at Nilai U together with the mentoring I received from my lecturers taught me how to balance academic and non-academic endeavours which were both equally important to me.”
Shee is currently working with Coca-Cola Bottlers Malaysia. She wants to gain as much work experience as possible before she embarks on an MBA.
Nilai U’s Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biotechnology equips students with industry-driven core modules.
Students are also offered specially crafted elective modules on Entrepreneurship, Critical Thinking, Professional Development and the much sought-after Outward Bound programme.
