Igniting minds, impacting lives

-

AT an IGBIS PYP Parent University session at IGB International School (IGBIS), attendees are watching a TED talk by Sunni Brown on the power of doodling.

They then close their eyes to clear their heads and doodle for a moment, letting their hands move freely. They compare doodles and laugh.

Aga Chojnacka, Primary Years Programme (PYP) coordinator and IGBIS PYP Parent University coach, shows the attendees recent research from Harvard Graduate School of Education about the positive impact of visible thinking and doodling on information processing and idea building.

A workshop like this takes place every month, during which parents, grandparents and other members of the IGBIS school community watch videos and presentations on the latest research, discuss new ideas and reflect on the applications.

IGBIS is a vibrant Early Years to Grade 12 international school that provides a dynamic, innovative and inclusive environment where students are challenged to excel in their learning and personal growth.

An International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, IGBIS is the only school in Malaysia authorised to run the full continuum of IB programmes – the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme, the Diploma Programme and the Careerrelated Programme.

IGBIS PYP Parent University aims to offer parents the conditions, resources and types of interactions that their children are immersed in daily – learning in a self-directed and inquiry-based way.

The August session unpacked the ideas of Play as a Way of Knowing, which helped attendees better understand who they and their children are as learners. Parents reflected on the needs of different types of learners and how play can become a universal language of learning.

In the Inspiring Curiosity and Creativity in all Learners workshop last month, parents and coaches discussed multiple ways of igniting curiosity and creativity in learners as well as ways of discovering and nurturing passions and talents.

The most recent session focused on Learner Agency, Leadership and Entrepreneurship Through the IB Programmes.

Teams looked into practical applications of the Learner Profile attitudes and attributes inside and outside the school setting. They also shared success stories of IB alumni who have become leaders embodying the Learner Profile and IB ethos.

IGBIS PYP Parent University is more than just a weekend opportunity to explore new types of learning and thinking.

It creates a learning community that goes beyond a school’s obligation to educate its students, fully embracing the school’s motto: Igniting minds. Impacting lives.
