UTM set to become a cashless campus
Students and faculty members can use a mobile wallet app to make payments.
A CASHLESS society is forming within the grounds of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Over 25,000 students and faculty members across the UTM Kuala Lumpur and Johor campuses will use Boost as their mode of payment for all on-campus purchases.
Developed by Axiata Digital, Boost is an e-wallet that allows users to pay for transactions using their mobile devices. They can top up the e-wallet using credit card, debit card or any of the 17 online banking partners.
“We aim to transform all our services to be easily accessed through digital means. This partnership marks the beginning of our initiative as we move towards being a fully digital campus,” said UTM development deputy vice chancellor Prof Dr Azlan Abdul Rahman.
“This is a very exciting time for usaswecementourstatusasa ‘cashless campus’ and pave the way towards a new digital lifestyle. We are preparing our students for the Industrial Revolution 4.0 mindset,” added Azlan.
Currently, 24 of the over 200 merchants within UTM have adopted cashless payment. Azlan believes that this number would grow quickly, and hopes that payment for UTM services, such as loans, can be done cash free.
Launched in January this year, Boost CEO Christopher Tiffin hopes that the app would change consumer behaviour and their daily transaction habit.
He also said Boost pays extra attention to security to ensure that the transactions are secure.
“We even held hackathons to see if anyone can break into our system, or perhaps spot a loophole,” said Tiffin.
Boost is available for Android and iOS devices.
