Journey towards a career in chiropractic
THIRD-year chiropractic student Leon Yeap En Leon did the initial years of his degree at the International Medical University (IMU) and is now pursuing his studies at RMIT Australia.
He had the privilege to undergo an interesting journey of the Foundation in Science (FiS) programme at IMU in 2014 when it was first introduced.
The FiS programme has prepared him to take on different sets of challenges – from the academic to the physical, mental and emotional.
“I would not say it is a bed of roses,” said Yeap. “It was more like a journey towards professionalism and adulthood.”
The major benefit that Yeap learnt from the programme was perseverance. Although the FiS is a pre-university programme, it functions like a university programme.
“I was taught to dress well, behave professionally and be punctual,” said Yeap. “These are three core elements of being a responsible, respectable health professional.”
Yeap shared that he was not spoon-fed with information as students from other preuniversity courses would have experienced. Nor did he only study when final examinations were near. The programme is designed to inculcate continuous learning and development, and not just for examinations.
Over time, he learnt to appreciate the programme more and enjoy every moment, keeping in mind his goal to persevere through everything.
“The moment I started the degree in IMU, I was well adapted to the university system and lifestyle.”
Yeap said he gained an edge over his peers while studying chiropractic in IMU.
