COMPLETING the Master of Business Administration (MBA) gave me the confidence, credentials and versatility needed to switch from a technical career path to one more focused on management.

I started my career as a component design engineer at Intel, validating product designs. After two years, I had the opportunity to lead a team to organise department events.

Through this opportunity, I discovered my talent in management and leadership and decided to further pursue this talent but lacked the formal education.

I sought advice from family and friends, who suggested I enrol in an MBA course. As I had work commitments, I needed an MBA course that could be done part-time in Malaysia with classes held on weekends.

Furthermore, it needed to be reputable and instructor-led, as I wanted to network with likeminded people.

I came across the Strathclyde MBA programme, which has triple accreditation, is ranked among the top 100 universities by Financial Times and offers students the flexibility to complete the programme within six years.

The knowledge that I gained from the programme proved useful in my role as a project manager.

Subjects such as Managing People in an Organisation and Analytical Support for Decision Making helped me provide methods to motivate my project team and make tactful decisions when running a project.

Furthermore, the programme helped me develop soft skills such as teamwork, conflict management, creative problem-solving and leadership that are all vital in a project manager.

As a Strathclyde MBA graduate with distinction, I encourage aspiring MBA students to take a leap of faith to start your own MBA journey.

The experience, knowledge, skills and network gained will set you apart and make you an asset to any organisation. – By Jarett Kwong Hou Yang (pic), 31, graduate of MBA with distinction (2017), University of Strathclyde
