IMU celebrates World Spine Day
WORLD Spine Day is celebrated on Oct 16 globally to raise awareness on spinal disorders, as part of the “Bone and Joint Decade’s Action Week”.
To mark the week, International Medical University (IMU) World Spine Day Committees will hold special events around the theme of “Your Back in Action” to raise awareness of good spinal health.
The IMU World Spine Day (WSD) 2017 celebrations began with a spinal health event at International Medical College (IMC) as early as August.
During the event, it raised awareness on the importance of spinal health maintenance to mostly IMC nursing students and staff.
The event was initiated with a game-based learning session called “kahoot”, sharing information on chiropractic profession, proper posture, and awareness on spinal disorders. Talks were delivered, fun activities such as aerobics took place and free spinal screenings were given to students and staff who participated.
A fitness challenge competition was held from Sept 25-27 in conjunction with IMU Cup 2017.
The aim of this event was to encourage the IMU community to practise an active and healthy lifestyle in their daily lives and maintain a good fitness level. This competition was designed by game master Hee Bee Wee to test out the fitness level of participants. Hee explained he aimed to improve the overall fitness of IMU students and staff by implementing difficult level routines in the challenge. Another event, the powerlifting competition, planned in conjunction with IMU Cup, was held on Sept 26 and 27.
Powerlifting mostly cover the strength aspect of an athlete and consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.
Finally, the main event at IMU was held on Sept 27 and 28, with the decoration team coming out with a giant 10m long full spine that hung vertically at the university atrium.
There were also an Instagram booth for creative photo challenges, the “Force Plate Thrust” competition and an Association of Chiropractic, Malaysia booth – all set up to further understand spinal health using games and spinal screening, among others.
Free spinal screening services were provided during the main event and open to all participants.
The spinal screening successfully raised awareness among the public about their own neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
The highlight was a prize-giving ceremony presented to all winners of the competitions held throughout the WSD celebrations.
These competitions included the “Thrusting Competition”, the “Hand-Grip Challenge” and the Instagram Creative photo challenge competition.
A yoga session also provided this year’s celebration with a harmonious ending.
IMU is the first and only university to offer the complete chiropractic educational programme in South-East Asia.
The four-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) Chiropractic programme at IMU was awarded full accreditation by the prestigious Council on Chiropractic Education, Australasia.
